New Era of Superman Begins with James Gunn’s DCU Reboot
In an era of unceasing superhero reboots, one particular blue-and-red-clad beacon of hope is set to grace our screens anew. Yes, folks, we’re talking about Superman, formerly known as the aptly titled “Superman: Legacy.” Co-piloted by the dynamic duo, James Gunn and Peter Safran, DC Studios is refusing to let this titan rest, rebooting him, cape and all, as they shift their focus from the DCEU into the trenches of the DCU. But, hold your gasps, as the question begs: who will don the iconic suit this time? What poignant tale of heroism have they cooked up for us? And who, pray tell, will have the Herculean task of bringing it all to life?
Stowing away any anticipation, Gunn recently pulled back the curtains on social media as they wrapped up filming Superman: Legacy. Keeping us in avid suspense, he tweeted: “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis…”
James Gunn Takes the Reigns
Marking the initial foray into the DCU cinematic universe (though it isn’t their first rodeo), the inaugural film is called simply, “Superman.” Gunn, of course, had never intended on delivering anything straightforward as he describes the film as the “true beginning” of his DCU chapter called “Gods and Monsters.”
The Story So Far
Packing away our speculations on a rehashed origin story, a detail from Warner Bros. steers us toward fresher pastures. Undeniably as colorful as a Kryptonite rainbow, “Superman” grapples with Clark Kent’s journey, weaving his human upbringing with his Kryptonian stuff of legend. The film sets out to explore the beacon of truth, justice, and the American way as he navigates the world teetering between cynicism and kindness.
Gunn revealed a glimpse into the film by posting artwork from the cover of “All-Star Superman,” authored by Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. As we flutter our eyebrows trying to decipher if Quitely’s work has influenced the plot, Gunn nudged us toward “an earlier part of Superman’s life,” but quick to assure us that our boy’s already slinging news at the Daily Planet.
Throwing a bone in the rumor mill, we also have our first peek at David Corenswet as the man himself.
Stellar Cast Confirmed
Trading in his Harvard Law grad suit for a much snugger fit, David Corenswet is leaping skyscrapers as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan stepping into Lois Lane’s shoes. Gunn stacked his film with a suite of co-stars: Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi sporting the mantle of Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion filling in as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan embodying Metamorpho. Not forgetting the baddie, María Gabriela de Faría weighs in as The Engineer, a bionic force laced with nanotechnology. Playing the supporting cast, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, and Wendell Pierce join the Daily Planet crew, and Beck Bennett enters the stadium as sports journalist, Steve Lombard. Finally, tinting the DCU with a darker shade, Nicholas Hoult dons the mastermind role of Lex Luthor.
Rounding off the Kent family equation, Gunn also confirmed on Threads the casting of Jon and Martha Kent. Played by Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell respectively, our beloved Ma and Pa Kent arrive to complete our cinematic Smallville family tableau.
Getting Ready to Fly
Gunn, doing his fair share of heavy lifting, not only worked on the script but is also helming the director’s chair.
Taking a flying leap off the bleachers, “Superman” is expected to burst into theaters faster than a speeding bullet on July 11, 2025. Because we all know that the only thing as timeless as a cheeky little bit of dry humor is the undying love for a good old superhero resurgence under the watchful eye of Gunn, DC Studios, and that glorious “S” soaring in the sky.
