10 Years Ago: The First Break in…

A Decade of Discoveries: Broken Frontier’s ‘Six Small Press Creators to Watch’

The story began a day late but not a dollar short. On February 23, 2015, Broken Frontier launched the very first ‘Six Small Press Creators to Watch.’ Initially, it was a one-off spotlight, meant to shine on raw talent and voices returning to comics. This exercise, however, organically morphed into something far more significant. Suddenly, it was a beacon of support and mentoring, fundamentally reshaping Broken Frontier’s mission.

A Milestone in Small Press Comics

Last year marked a notable milestone. Celebrating ten rounds of the program, Broken Frontier paid tribute to the artists nurtured over a decade. Over these years, 66 creatives have basked in the spotlight. We’ve published three anthologies showcasing their brilliance and orchestrated two London exhibitions celebrating their art. Our efforts also included numerous panels, talks, events, and our presence at festivals. Not to forget, last year’s grand ’10 Years of the Broken Frontier Six to Watch’ party and signing at Gosh! Comics.

Not every artist featured has remained in comics. Instead, many have transitioned seamlessly into children’s illustration, video games, and editorial illustration. Yet, Broken Frontier, with its keen eye for talent, predicted who would rise. Alumni have worked with industry giants like 2000 AD/Rebellion, BOOM! Studios, Dark Horse Comics, and Oni Press, among others.

Spotting Tomorrow’s Stars Today

Broken Frontier has become synonymous with spotting comic stars of tomorrow. It’s a testament to our foresight and dedication. Despite resource constraints, we have made a tangible difference in many creators’ lives. Watching these artists grow and perfect their craft has been nothing short of joyful.

From Anna Readman’s work in 2000 AD to Sabba Khan’s poignant memoir, to Dominique Duong’s upcoming gem, our artists keep astounding us. Their command of the form leaps bounds with each creation.

Reflecting on the Journey and Looking Ahead

Reflecting over these ten years, one can explore all eleven ‘Six to Watch’ line-ups in one place. Moreover, a special Gosh Comics and Broken Frontier Drink and Draw Online is set for February 27th. It’s an open invitation to join the creative frenzy.

As we step into the future, more panels and events celebrating ‘Six to Watch’ are coming in 2025. By 2035, we dream of celebrating 20 years of supporting artists. That’s the hope, at least—should we still be voyagers on this creative frontier.

Here’s to another glorious decade of unearthing talent, whispering tales of artistic triumph, and nurturing the next wave of comic luminaries. Roll on, Broken Frontier!
