Determining the Weight of Your Books for Shipping

August Tales makes shipping simple. When you complete a trade or sale, the platform calculates shipping based on the book’s verified weight, the destination, and the service you choose. You can print a prepaid label at home or take a QR code to the post office — no guessing, no overpaying.

How Book Weights Work

Every book on the platform has a weight tied to it, and getting that weight right is what keeps shipping costs accurate for everyone.

When you list a book, the platform pulls weight data from available sources. But because collected editions vary — different printings, hardcover vs. softcover, with or without dust jackets — we ask each member to verify the weight of the book in their possession. You can do this with a kitchen scale or a postal scale.

Once a book’s weight has been verified through three separate trades, that weight is considered qualified and becomes the trusted reference for future transactions. Until then, each member confirms the weight before shipping. This keeps things fair and accurate across the community.

Available Shipping Services (United States)

For domestic shipments, August Tales supports the following USPS services:

Media Mail — The most affordable option for shipping books. Delivery takes 2–8 business days, and rates are based on weight only — not distance. Tracking is included. No insurance is included by default, but additional coverage can be purchased. Note that Media Mail is subject to USPS inspection to verify that the contents are eligible media (books qualify; magazines, comics with ads, and non-media items do not).

USPS Ground Advantage — A reliable mid-range option with 2–5 day delivery. Rates are based on weight and distance (zone). Tracking and $100 of insurance are included.

Priority Mail — Faster delivery in 1–3 business days. Rates are based on weight and zone. Tracking and up to $100 of insurance are included. Flat Rate options are also available — the price stays the same regardless of weight or destination, which can be a great deal for heavier books or omnibuses.

Exact shipping costs are calculated automatically when you generate a label through the platform, so you’ll always see current pricing. USPS updates its rates periodically throughout the year.

Shipping by Region

August Tales serves members in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Currently, trading and shipping are available within your own region only — for example, U.S. members trade with other U.S. members, and U.K. members trade with other U.K. members. Shipping options and carriers are tailored to each region. Cross-region international shipping is not available at this time.

Tips for Packing and Shipping Books

Wrap your book in a plastic bag or sleeve to protect against moisture. Use a snug-fitting box or rigid mailer — avoid oversized boxes that let the book shift during transit. Add padding if needed, especially for hardcovers or omnibuses with dust jackets. Seal the package securely and affix your label or present your QR code at the post office.

Ship promptly after a trade or sale is confirmed. The platform tracks shipment status, and timely shipping keeps the community running smoothly.
