Macmillan’s 23rd Street Books: Redefining Adult Graphic Novels with Star-Studded Talent
By Patrick Kelley
In a groundbreaking move, Macmillan Publishers has launched 23rd Street Books, a new imprint dedicated to adult graphic novels. This venture, spearheaded by First Second’s Mark Siegel, aims to diversify and deepen the reach of graphic storytelling into adult genres.
The Birth of 23rd Street Books
Macmillan has a rich history of publishing and now boasts a dynamic new headquarters at 120 Broadway. The shift to this modern facility allows Macmillan to consolidate operations. This creates a more integrated and innovative environment for its teams.
A Star-Studded Lineup
23rd Street Books promises a mix of styles and genres. It aims to appeal to a broad spectrum of adult readers. Initial offerings will feature renowned creators like Gene Luen Yang and Ben Hatke. Additionally, talents from other fields, such as actor Damon Wayans, Jr., and poet Saul Williams, are included. This eclectic mix underscores the imprint’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of graphic novels.
Leadership and Vision
Mark Siegel will serve as Vice President, Executive Editorial, and Creative Director for both First Second and 23rd Street Books. Siegel envisions this new imprint as a “flowering of First Second.” Editorial Director Calista Brill will work alongside Siegel, bringing a blend of creativity and editorial excellence to the imprint.
A Cultural and Historical Footprint
23rd Street itself is steeped in history. This contributes to the cultural tapestry of New York City. The street has seen significant development since the early 20th century, with landmarks like the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower shaping its skyline. This historical significance adds depth to the new imprint, connecting the past with the future of graphic storytelling.
A New Era for Adult Graphic Novels
23rd Street Books is set to launch in autumn 2025. It aims to become a beacon for adult graphic novels. The titles will range from humorous to serious, escapist to realist. The imprint will also serve as a creative lab for pioneering new voices and innovative storytelling techniques.
