A Unique and Moody LGBTQIA+ Vampire Horror
Dark Horse’s latest offering, “Summer Shadows,” is poised to be a standout in fall’s comic lineup. This four-issue mystery thriller transports readers to the fictional Greek island of Avraxos. Nick Landry arrives, searching for his missing ex, Anthony, who has vanished under sinister circumstances. Little does Nick know, his quest will entangle him with a coven of vampires.
Penned by John Harris Dunning, illustrated by Ricardo Cabral, colored by Brad Simpson, and lettered by Jim Campbell, “Summer Shadows” promises a gripping crime thriller with a gruesome horror twist. Adding to the allure, it also offers a touch of social satire, exploring the predatory nature of the super-rich.
A Deep Dive into Desire and Danger
The monthly series kicks off in September, but fans can look forward to a complete trade paperback collection in April 2025. Ricardo Cabral’s evocative cover for this collection has already set the tone for what promises to be a visually stunning series.
Dark Horse describes the series as, “A unique and moody LGBTQIA+ vampire horror.” John Harris Dunning, speaking on the Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast, shared his inspiration for the story. He delves into the creatures of the night because of their innate connection to human desire. “They summon up the big themes of attraction: sex, eternity, desire, danger, obsession, and our fear of being dominated by our animal selves. They’re a way we can examine these hopes and fears safely in a mythic form. Monsters are a useful way of examining our deepest selves and anxieties while keeping them at a safe distance,” Dunning explains.
“Summer Shadows #1” will be available from Dark Horse Comics on September 11. The trade paperback will hit bookstores on April 15 and comic shops the following day.
