What’s Inside the Box: The Unwrapped Mystery of Five Nights At Freddy’s 4
Five Nights at Freddy’s mastermind, Scott Cawthon, has blown the lid off the franchise’s biggest whodunit – the mysterious locked box from Five Nights at Freddy’s 4. Unveiled during the end cutscene of Night 7, the box – secured with not one but two locks – flaunts an intriguing message casually suggesting maybe some things ought to be kept… well, under lock and key for a bit.
Yet, despite a tantalizing glimpse of the opened box lurking in FNAF World’s game files, players have remained as locked out as ever, reduced to merely shaking the locks in bewildered frustration. And yes, the box isn’t just an annoying decoration – it’s got something inside.
Esteemed gaming YouTuber Dawko, a respected connoisseur of Five Nights at Freddy’s gameplay videos, theories and interviews, recently brought up the elephant in the room in his sit-down with Cawthon. The ‘mystery box,’ he nudged, was the gnawing hunger fans urgently wanted sated. And Cawthon, though warning of potential dissatisfaction, coughed up an answer.
Assuring the box doesn’t echo emptiness, Cawthon confessed a sprinkle of ideas concerning the box were originally part of his brew. Unfortunately, not everything you plan turns out to be a fine wine – some remain grape juice. For all the ideas and creative pathways initially laid out for the box, the mystery chest was eventually sidetracked. Cawthon explains that despite the box clearly having its time in the spotlight ordained, the storyline took a detour, conveniently forgetting to take the box along on its merry adventure. Unpulled strings left dangling in the ether of the subconscious.
So, the box has something, but Scott himself might need a map and a shovel to find that loot again – if he ever feels so inclined, that is.
Cooking Up Theories Over a Decade
Since its launch on July 23, 2015, the box in Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 has fascinated fans like a hypnotic enigma, becoming a pet topic for speculation that has spanned almost a decade. Fans took on the detective mantle, pouring over the game and its promotional material like Holmes on caffeine, quickly coming to realize that not one, but two elusive keys were needed to unlock this chest of untold mysteries.
Fans theorized the box could be housing something horrific, regrettable, and painfully nostalgic. Further analysis led them to connect the dots between the box, the heart-wrenching Happiest Day Minigame, and the sob-inducing storyline of FNAF. The box was therefore put to house the shattered remains of the Crying Child, lovingly “put back together” by the one and only William Afton.
While this seems the perfect tragedy-wrapped-in-a-mystery ending, Cawthon’s cryptic comments suggest the box’s content could be as lost as Nemo. A mystery forever shrouded, swallowed up by a fickle and evolving creative process. But hey, just because Scott “doesn’t know” if he will pursue that plot thread again, doesn’t mean he won’t get a middle-of-the-night epiphany to tie up this loose end like a pretty little bow. Furniture moves, stories change, and maybe, just maybe, the box will finally have its day in the sun.
