The Acolyte Canceled: No Season 2 for Disney+ Star Wars Series
Disney+ has officially decided not to move forward with a second season of The Acolyte, a Star Wars offshoot series starring Amandla Stenberg. This news comes just over a month after the first season’s eight-episode run concluded on the streaming platform.
A Strong Start, But Momentum Fades
The Acolyte began its journey on June 4 with a promising launch. The series debuted with two episodes, generating 4.8 million views on its first day, making it the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year. Within five days, the viewership had climbed to 11.1 million globally, earning the series a spot on Nielsen’s Top 10 originals chart at No. 7. By the following week, it had moved up to No. 6.
Despite this strong start, the series struggled to maintain its momentum. By Week 3, The Acolyte had dropped out of the Top 10 and remained absent until a brief return at No. 10 after the finale’s release. The final episode garnered 335 million minutes viewed, which is believed to be the lowest for a Star Wars series finale on Disney+.
High Costs and Viewership Expectations
Like other major streaming platforms, Disney+ sets a high bar for renewing expensive, big-budget series. With production costs exceeding $100 million per season, The Acolyte faced significant pressure to perform. Although the series did well with critics, earning a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it left Star Wars fans divided, which likely contributed to its declining viewership.
Creative Hopes and Industry Realities
Leslye Headland, the creator, director, executive producer, and showrunner of The Acolyte, had pitched ideas for a second season and expressed her hopes for renewal in interviews. However, the series’ performance fell short of the high expectations set by Disney+ for such high-cost productions.
While The Acolyte won’t be returning, Lucasfilm continues to invest in its Star Wars properties. The Mandalorian, the first and most successful Disney+ Star Wars series, is set to cross over into feature films with the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu. Additionally, Ahsoka, which preceded The Acolyte, has already been renewed for a second season.
