Netflix’s ‘The Platform 2’ Hits Global Top Spot

The much-awaited sequel, ‘The Platform 2,’ has marked its debut on Netflix with staggering viewership numbers. This sequel channels back to a gritty dystopian thriller, the original ‘The Platform’ from 2019. Its narrative was woven around the inmates of a peculiar prison, where a descending platform served as the delivery system for food.
Hit Sequel
This sequel stormed Netflix on October 4th, soon topping the Global charts for the week between Sept. 30 and Oct. 4. It amassed around 19.4 million and 32.6 million viewing hours. This impressive feat placed it as the most-viewed title overall. Despite having only two days to make waves, ‘The Platform 2’ over-delivered. Comparing to the original’s monumental viewership of 56 million in its initial month, the sequel’s performance is noteworthy.
A Different Plotline
‘The Platform 2’ delves into a unique plot, while spiraling around the same brutal prison. The narrative succeeds in expanding the universe set by the 2019 thriller, further fueling introspection on human society and political disparities. The director, Galder Gatzelu-Urrutia, reprised his role of steering this sequel, flanked by a stellar cast.
Critical Reception
Despite its commercial success, the sequel didn’t quite strike gold with the critics. ‘The Platform’ in 2019 had seen far more positive reviews, with a noteworthy score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, the sequel seemed less celebrated, with a critical score of 47% and audience approval of just 27%.
Charting Successes
Criticism, however, didn’t deter people from indulging in the sequel. This continued interest in the saga managed to reignite virtual footfall for the 2019 version, propelling it back to the charts in fifth place.
Other Chart Toppers
The past week stumbled upon a rediscovery of Tim Burton’s adaptation, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. It scored 7.1 million views, outpacing new entrants like It’s What’s Inside.
TV Shines
In contrast, the TV field witnessed Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story fetching second place in its third week with 13.1 million views. But the first spot got snatched up by the viral guess-who series, Nobody Wants This, adding 15.9 million in its second week.
