by August Tales

Universal Pictures set the stage ablaze today. Five new posters and a tantalizing TV spot for the upcoming musical, “Wicked,” made their debut. The film’s release is set for November 22, 2024.

Box Office Challenges Met with Confidence

Musicals have seen better days at the box office, but Universal is hoping to turn the tide. The mandate proposed at CinemaCon was to “paint theaters green” this Thanksgiving. A playful nod to both the infamous hue of the musical’s lead character and the money they hope to rake in. Whether this promise holds up, though, is anyone’s guess.

The new TV spot gives a nod to the film’s musical roots, which has been a bit of an overlooked aspect thus far. Along with the spot, the new posters further ramp up the anticipation.

Introducing “Wicked” On Screen

After stirring hearts on stage for decades, “Wicked” is making its much-anticipated leap to the big screen. This latest cinematic extravaganza stars seasoned performers Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. They take on the roles of Elphaba and Glinda from the untold story of the witches of Oz, respectively.

The journey tracks the duo’s unlikely friendship from their days at Shiz University. Consequences of their fated encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz set them on divergent paths. The tale unfurls their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

A Stellar Cast Brings “Wicked” to Life

Adding to the star power are Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, and Ethan Slater. Newcomer Marissa Bode and the highly recognized Jeff Goldblum complete the ensemble. The film introduces the characters Pfannee and ShenShen, Glinda’s sly companions, played by Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James. Keala Settle and Peter Dinklage bring their expertise to a newly created character, Miss Coddle, and the voice of Dr. Dillamond respectively.

Release Date and Beyond

Acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu of (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “In the Heights”) is at the helm of this project. Universal plans to release this first part in theaters on November 22, 2024. The sequel, “Wicked Part Two,” is already on the calendar for November 21, 2025.

As the curtain draws closer, fans eagerly wait to see if “Wicked” delivers the box office magic it promises.
