Joker 2 Digital Release Set After Theatrical Flop
By August Tales
Joker: Folie à Deux stumbled at the box office, and its digital release might be Warner Bros.’ saving grace. Set to debut on home entertainment platforms less than a month after its cinematic run, the studio hopes to recoup its losses through digital and streaming sales.
Disappointment on the Big Screen
The movie hit theaters in the U.S. on October 4, 2024, and its digital release is now slated for October 29, 2024. According to Variety, this fast-track decision follows underwhelming box office figures. Joker 2 initially raked in a global sum of $165 million. In stark contrast, its predecessor amassed $248.4 million within just three days.
Unfortunately, the sequel hasn’t lived up to expectations. With a production and marketing budget of about $300 million, it’s on track to lose $150-200 million. Analysts predict the film will wrap up its domestic journey with earnings of $65 million. Overseas, global revenue might reach $210-215 million by the end.
A Critical Letdown
Critics weren’t kind to Joker: Folie à Deux. It garnered a low 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare “D” CinemaScore. Its bold musical twist didn’t resonate well with audiences. This marks a stark departure from the original 2019 Joker’s success, which shattered records by grossing over $1 billion and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film.
A Glimmer of Hope Digitally
Despite its missteps in theaters, Warner Bros. places hope in the digital release. The studio anticipates additional revenue streams from international box office takings, including lingering interest from markets like China. While the curtains may have closed too soon for the film theatrically, its digital debut could offer a comeback opportunity.
Warner Bros. remains optimistic that Joker: Folie à Deux will chart a new course in the digital domain. Will it manage to capture the audience’s attention the second time around? Only time will tell as the streaming launch draws near.
