Anthony Mackie Talks About Sam Wilson’s Journey

From Football to Shield

Mackie candidly reminisced about the day he learned his character’s fate. The scene was set in Chris Evans’ living room, during a football game. Evans, the original Captain America, subtly handed Mackie the last two pages of the Avengers: Endgame script. "We read it, hugged, and jumped around in a circle," Mackie shared with a grin. That pivotal moment, featuring Old Steve passing the shield to Sam, marked the beginning of a new era.

A New Captain Emerges

Though the handover happened in Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson’s transformation into Captain America wasn’t immediate. The Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, charts this transition. Initially hesitant, Sam donated the shield, only to watch it given to someone else by the government. However, after John Walker’s fall from grace, Sam stepped into his new role with conviction.

Talking about the forthcoming Captain America: Brave New World, Mackie detailed Sam’s approach. "Sam is still a counselor, still helping soldiers," he explained. But there’s more; he’s now a leader in his community. Without the Super Soldier Serum, Mackie emphasized a shift in how Sam will fight. "He uses his brains and wit, not just brawn," said Mackie. This Captain America fights with intelligence and empathy, reshaping heroism.

Assembling Allies and Foes

Brave New World’s story promises intrigue and action. Joining Mackie is Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, Sam’s successor as Falcon. Together, they’ll face formidable adversaries, including the Serpent Society, The Leader, and Thunderbolt Ross/Red Hulk.
