Mark Waid’s Return to Action Comics

Some writers define characters, and others become part of their legacy. For Superman fans, Mark Waid stands among the latter, a storyteller who has spent decades shaping the mythos of the Man of Steel. Now, with DC’s “Summer of Superman” initiative set to launch, Waid takes the reins of Action Comics once again.

But this time, he’s not alone. Skylar Patridge, a rising star in comics, makes her DC series debut as the lead artist, bringing fresh energy to the world of Superman. DC made the big reveal at ComicsPRO ’25, cementing Waid’s continued influence in shaping Krypton’s greatest hero.

A Legendary Writer Returns to His Roots

Waid’s relationship with Action Comics runs deep. Back in the ‘80s, he penned issues #635 to #642, contributing to Action Comics Weekly. His recent twelve-part saga, “Phantoms,” further solidified his Superman expertise. Now, he’s set to deliver a brand-new vision of Clark Kent’s formative years.

Starting in June with Action Comics #1087, the series takes a bold new direction, exploring the origins of Superman before he wore the iconic cape. Instead of Metropolis’ skyline, readers return to Smallville, where a young Clark Kent learns the weight of his powers before the world knew his name.

The Superboy Chronicles Begin

For Waid, this project presents a fresh creative challenge.

“I start the book with Clark as a 15-year-old boy, learning to be a superhero for the first time,” Waid shares. “What is that like, learning to use your powers at that age? What kind of challenges are you facing?”

But this isn’t just another trip down memory lane. Waid and Patridge are modernizing Smallville, keeping its rustic charm while making it feel like a real, evolving town.

“Farms don’t look like that anymore,” Waid adds. “So we’re updating the setting while still keeping it true to its heart.”

The story kicks off with young Clark attending the Metropolis Expo of Tomorrow—a landmark event in DC history. This might just be where Superboy makes his first public appearance, marking the beginning of his journey toward heroism.

A Creative Team Built for Legacy

Skylar Patridge, known for her dynamic storytelling and striking character designs, steps into the Superman universe with this new series. Her artwork perfectly matches Waid’s ability to blend nostalgia with innovation, ensuring Action Comics delivers a visual feast alongside its compelling narrative.

Action Comics #1087 will feature a main cover by Ryan Sook, along with variant covers from Patridge, David Talaski, and Lesley “Leirix” Le. Each artist brings a unique lens to Superman’s world, making every edition of this issue a collector’s dream.

A Storyline That Connects Past and Present

This new era of Action Comics reflects the tone Waid set with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest—balancing classic storytelling with modern sensibilities. The series, set in the recent past, integrates seamlessly into DC’s evolving universe.

The story builds anticipation by exploring moments that shaped Clark Kent, moments that define his moral compass before Metropolis knew him as Superman. It’s about self-discovery, responsibility, and the first sparks of heroism.

As excitement builds, fans eagerly await a first look at Skylar Patridge’s designs, teasing a world both familiar and refreshingly new.

Superman’s Legacy Grows Stronger

Waid’s return marks more than just another run—it signifies a new chapter in Superman’s legacy. With bold storytelling, a fresh artistic approach, and a deep respect for the mythos, Action Comics enters a new golden age.

The countdown begins. Superman is back where he belongs, and the future looks brighter than ever.
