Ben Affleck’s Daredevil Details Unveiled by Writers

The Abandoned Daredevil: A Tale of Wolverine & Deadpool

If hype were currency, “Deadpool & Wolverine” would have a higher GDP than most small countries. This celluloid superhero mashup, starring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, is having a theatrical dance-off in venues around the world and is doing a formidable job racking up fans. But herein lies the irony. Despite the many Easter Eggs that were generously strewn about the movie – a veritable egg hunt of characters and references for the fans – there was one cameo left out in the cold. This is the story of that very cameo.

A Daredevil Cut Loose

The unfortunate singleton is Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. Despite having a mention and being represented, albeit indirectly, by Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Mr. Affleck did not get to don his red leather suit in this particular film. Now the question you are probably pondering, why was he left out from the superpower shenanigans and was he even considered in the first place? A spoonful of patience, dear reader, and all shall be revealed.

Behind the Scene Talk

Probing further into this mystery, “Deadpool & Wolverine” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick gave IndieWire an insight into the film’s production. Asked about Affleck’s Daredevil’s fate in the movie, they served up an unexpected revelation. So, which Fox Universe characters had they yearned for, but for whatever reason, could never quite reach?

Reese: “I think the answer’s nobody. I think everybody we asked said yes.”

Wernick: “Daredevil we wanted.”

Reese: “Did we want to get Ben [Affleck]? We never asked Ben though, I don’t think.”

Wernick: “At some point, Ben was on the list.”

Reese: “He was on the list, but I don’t think it ever came to sketching it into the script or actually asking him. One of the joys of “Deadpool” is how its success made it easier and easier to attract others to the movie. Ryan typically has these folks’ names on speed dial.”

As the plot thickens, we are left wondering what might have been. No doubt, fans will continue their Easter Egg hunt, knowing full well one particular Devil is amiss. Got a thought to share? Let’s hear it in the comments!
