The Hero Problem
Captain America: Brave New World spotlights a burning question – who’s really left to defend Earth? Sam Wilson, our Stars and Stripes hero, teams up with Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon. This duo takes on a mission that thrusts them into a glaring spotlight, exposing the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios has always managed to whip up a delectable mix of action and drama. But, with the MCU’s sprawling roster across galaxies, Earthly threats now often find themselves on the backburner. When a sinister plot targets world leaders at a White House summit, Earth teeters on the brink of war. Where are the Avengers when you need them?
According to the film’s narrative, a day passes before President Thaddeus Ross emerges from hiding, greeted only by Sam and Joaquin. Although Ross doesn’t win popularity contests among supers, this situation demands more than just a two-hero response. The assassination attempt on global leaders screams for a heroic cavalry. But tumbleweeds roll by instead.
Where Are the Heroes?
The plight faced by Wilson and Torres shines a light on the dwindling hero pool. Ross could’ve beckoned former Avengers like Bruce Banner or James Rhodes. Clint Barton might be an option if he hasn’t completely hung up his bow. Yet, droves of others are conveniently MIA for various reasons.
The cast of Thunderbolts lies under scrutiny with dubious affiliations. The Asgardians, though settled on Earth, juggle their own issues. Wakanda struggles with global tensions over vibranium, while Talokan maintains its watery aloofness. The Eternals? They’re practically phantoms both in and out of the cinematic realm.
Memories of Spider-Man’s Peter Parker are erased, while Kamala Khan and her young peers seem too inexperienced for prime-time heroics. She-Hulk and Daredevil’s legal exploits don’t exactly translate to saving the world. Vision’s existential quest, Wanda’s absence, and Blade’s screenplay troubles further thin the ranks. Magic’s premier group, led by Wong, is busy rebuilding. Meanwhile, Monica Rambeau explores cosmic realms, and Ant-Man’s crew remains sidelined by the government.
Shang-Chi, bizarrely, appears to have vanished without a trace.
Facing the Future
The missing-in-action heroes make it clear why only Captain America and the Falcon answered this staggering call. A once robust heroic roster now resembles a Hollywood list of unavailable lead actors. It’s clear that the MCU needs a fresh injection of energy and talent.
Speculation about the forthcoming lineup of Sam’s New Avengers piques curiosity. The Thunderbolts might reveal a few surprises, and the anticipated The Fantastic Four: First Steps could offer clarity. Since the fall of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, Earth’s defenses have been depleted by cosmic commitments and the multiverse.
The urgency to replenish this hero shortage looms large. The Leader warns Sam Wilson: darker threats are on the horizon. The current duo can’t tackle them alone. Time is ticking for the MCU to muster new champions. Who will answer the call? The battle lines are drawn, and the world waits with bated breath.
