The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – “The Book of Carol” Makes Its Debut
By August Tales
In “The Book of Carol,” we’re thrust back into the world of The Walking Dead. Just two weeks after the first season’s cliffhanger, we find Daryl Dixon in training and Carol in Maine. Importantly, she has just found out Daryl’s in France. Determined, as always, Carol sets out on a journey only possible in The Walking Dead universe: reaching France.
Meanwhile, in France, the atmosphere at the Nest is strained. Everyone realizes that Genet, their nemesis, has captured some of their people, thanks to Pouvoir. Naturally, this threatens their safety and endangers Laurent yet again.
Daryl’s Dilemma
Daryl, our ever-ready fighter, agrees they need to rescue their comrades. However, he battles with his conscience. He’s left people behind, and he doubts he can find happiness in the Nest. His thoughts wander to his distant friends, and we cut to Carol in the U.S.
She’s at a junkyard where Daryl was once held hostage and starts asking about “the guy who owned that bike.” As expected, she faces resistance, but pulls out Daryl’s crossbow. Eventually, one surrenders and spills the beans.
Carol on the Road
Soon, we see Carol driving down an open road, unsure of her next move. Suddenly, a small plane captures her attention and she hits a walker. The crash leaves her injured but she persists. She follows the plane to a gated compound.
Our resourceful Carol manages to sneak in and meet Ash, a hot, solitary resident. Ash has found the secret to survival. He has food, a generator, and an airplane. Remarkably, he’s escaped the notice of CRM.
Then, Carol does what Carol does best. She infiltrates his personal space and a skirmish with approaching walkers leaves his greenhouse in shambles.
Ash Opens Up
Understandably, Ash is upset, but Carol manages to befriend him. They speak about Ash’s deceased son, Avi. More so, Ash’s refusal to fly away reveals the depth of his grief.
Carol tells her own lie about her late husband and daughter, Sophia, being in France. The lie, designed to persuade Ash to fly her there, initially fails. However, Ash has a change of heart. This decision is mystifying, considering the lack of navigation and weather forecast.
A Risky Adventure
By night, a malfunction in the grid sparks a fire in Ash’s ethanol storage. Walkers are on their trail. In the knick of time, Ash and Carol board his plane and take off towards France.
Details of Carol’s cross-continental journey are kept under wraps. All we know is she’s heading to France. As The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – season two unfolds, the rest of her adventure awaits.
And as fate would have it, it seems Ash won’t survive for long. After all, it wouldn’t be The Walking Dead without some sacrifice.
