DC’s Clayface Resurfaces: Directors Line Up for the Spotlight
DC’s beloved shape-shifting villain, Clayface, is ready for his moment on the big screen. As the studio gears up to breathe life into this complex character, potential directors are stepping into the spotlight. Last week, Deadline revealed that pitches for the film are flying in. Among the names creating a buzz, Jeff Wadlow and James Watkins stand out as contenders to helm this intriguing project.
Directors in the Mix
In the coming days, DC Studios will hear pitches from various directors, according to insiders. Wadlow and Watkins are reportedly top names being considered, with both bringing their distinctive flair to the table. Although the casting remains on pause, it’s whispered that some preliminary conversations have already started. However, these chats will only solidify once the director’s chair is filled.
Both directors have carved a niche in the horror-thriller genre. Jeff Wadlow is no stranger to fear, having directed 2024’s Imaginary and past cine-scares like Fantasy Island and Truth or Dare. He also dipped into the superhero world with Kick-Ass 2, showing he can handle action with humor. On the other hand, James Watkins’s recent work includes the 2024 remake of Speak No Evil and the spine-chilling The Woman in Black. Their expertise could perfectly mirror Clayface’s dark and unpredictable essence.
Inside the Clayface Universe
Details remain scarce, yet a horror-thriller vibe strongly surrounds the Clayface project. Acclaimed writer and filmmaker Mike Flanagan is at the helm of the script, adding further intrigue. In an intriguing twist, DC’s co-head James Gunn described Clayface as a DCU story. This signals its place within his and Peter Safran’s newly minted DC universe, which has begun with the animated Creature Commandos.
While casting news remains under wraps, it’s noteworthy that Alan Tudyk is already voicing Clayface in Creature Commandos. Gunn hinted at continuity across animation and live-action, suggesting Tudyk’s involvement might extend beyond just voice work. This aligns with Frank Grillo’s dual involvement as Rick Flag Sr. in both formats.
Additionally, Gunn mentioned that Tudyk will portray a live-action character within the DCU. While initially uncertain, Tudyk’s roles as Doctor Phosphorus and Will Magnus might overlap, adding layers to his DCU participation.
As the Clayface movie shapes up, fans can eagerly anticipate a blend of horror, suspense, and signature DC storytelling. With strong creative forces in talks, this cinematic endeavor promises to reshape the villain landscape in exciting ways.
