Dark Horse Comics Denounces AI-Generated Art and Writing
The creatives in the comic book world face a cat-and-mouse chase like no other. Does that smell like a sequel to “WALL-E versus Ultron”? At the heart of this all-out brawl is the villain of “artificial intelligence.” Digital software isn’t just accused of thievery but also of killing art itself. Joining the chorus is Dark Horse Comics, who announced their support for real humans over AI-generated art or writing.
Dark Horse Comics’ Stand
On July 18, Dark Horse Comics took to social media to announce their stance. They addressed the new FAQs in the comic industry with a firm nod of support to “independent creators,” clearly siding with humans over AIs.
Dark Horse Comics has always been a supporter of underdogs in the comic world. Now, they have a new rule on their submissions page: “Dark Horse does not accept any submissions that include material generated by computer Artificial Intelligence programs.” So, that’s an end to that… or is it just the beginning?
Setting a Precedent
Before Dark Horse Comics donned its superhero cape, other comic moguls made hushed commitments. DC Comics President Jim Lee called AI a creativity thief, but his company hasn’t put this in writing. DC’s silent protest was noted when it shelved ‘AI-inspired’ variant covers by Daxiong and Francesco Mattina. Despite their silence, their actions resonated within the industry. However, Dark Horse Comics made sure their stance was loud and clear.
Stirring the Pot
The AI issue has largely targeted artwork, letting writing off the hook. Image Comics, another titan, doesn’t seem perturbed about AI-generated writing; their guidelines only disapprove of AI art. But Dark Horse has pledged against both AI art and writing. Have they set a precedent or stirred the hornet’s nest? Their stance on artificial intelligence echoes louder than expected. But remember, it’s all fun and games until WALL-E learns how to draw better than Picasso.
