Green Lantern’s New Guardian: John Stewart Shines in Burbank

Burbank welcomed a new giant to its streets today. Not just any giant—it’s John Stewart. The city unveiled a massive statue of the iconic Green Lantern. This new addition, weighing over 600 pounds, is a tribute to DC’s first Black costumed superhero. It’s not just a statue; it’s a symbol of change and history.

A Modern Monument

Crafted with precision, the statue was inspired by artist Jamal Campbell’s vision. It was meticulously brought to life by the American Fine Arts Foundry and Fabrication located right in Burbank. The piece stands as a testament to Stewart’s enduring legacy. Vice Mayor Nikki Perez, along with DC’s luminaries like Jim Lee, joined the celebration. They saw the statue make its grand debut at Empire Center.

Jim Lee, DC’s President and CCO, passionately spoke about this milestone. In his view, John Stewart was a revolutionary character. He debuted in Green Lantern #87 back in 1971. Stewart broke the mold, ditching the masks to just be himself—a rarity then and now.

This is the third statue in Burbank’s growing collection. Previously, Batman arrived in 2020, followed by Wonder Woman in 2023. Each of these monuments celebrates DC’s vibrant and diverse universe. In addition to the statue, Burbank’s got more superhero goodness up its sleeve. They launched an exclusive comic titled Green Lantern John Stewart, Global Guardian. Written by acclaimed authors John Ridley and Charlotte Fullerton McDuffie, with art by renowned artists, it promises to be a hit. Expect a visual feast with cover art by Jamal Campbell once again.
