Doctor Doom: The Time He Saved Christmas
Doctor Doom is not just your typical villain. He’s a scientist, a sorcerer, and a ruler. As Latveria’s leader and Earth’s current Sorcerer Supreme, he wears many hats. But, for one extraordinary Christmas Eve, he took on an unexpected role—Santa Claus.
The Day Doctor Doom Became Santa
The unlikely holiday tale comes from the 1990 comic, What The–?! #10. Written by Scott Lobdell with art by John Byrne, the story begins with Doctor Doom getting ready for a winter’s nap. His rest is interrupted when the castle’s defenses capture intruders. To his surprise, the trespasser is Santa Claus, injured while delivering a gift to Latveria’s ruler.
Injured but not fatally, Santa is unable to finish his annual world tour. Desperate, he asks Doom to take over for the night. In exchange, Santa offers Doom his heart’s desire. Bound by honor, Doctor Doom accepts the challenge. Thus begins his adventure as "Santa Doom," delivering toys to all the good kids on Earth.
Doom, As Santa, Nearly Fought Every Hero in New York
Victor Von Doom is known for his presence. Even as Santa, he draws the attention of nearly every superhero in New York City. The Fantastic Four, leading the charge, rush to hold him accountable. Their vigilante justice isn’t deterred by his uncharacteristic good deeds.
By sheer luck, their showdown happens outside a children’s hospital. When a young girl asks why the heroes want to attack Santa, Doom brilliantly shifts the narrative. Claiming the heroes are helping him hand out toys, he protects his dignity. His quick thinking allows him to fulfill his promise without any further hero-villain clashes.
A Heart’s Desire Already Fulfilled
Weeks later, a recovered Santa stands ready to honor their deal. Surprisingly, Doctor Doom dismisses the offer. He reveals his heart’s desire has already been met. As the comic concludes, Doom clutches a teddy bear. It’s a gift from the girl whose innocent question helped him complete his mission and preserve Christmas.
Doctor Doom’s unexpected role as Santa is a testament to his complexity. Though often cast as the villain, this tale adds a quirky twist to his legendary persona.
