Rebellion Brings Back ’40 Years of Scream!’ Collection
By August Tales
A fresh wave of demand has prompted Rebellion Publishing to reprint the highly coveted 40 Years of Scream! collection. Initially slated for release in May, the anthology quickly sold out before hitting store shelves, captivating fans with its nostalgic appeal.
Horror’s Return to the Spotlight
First published in March 1984, Scream! introduced readers to a world of humor-laced horror. Though it lasted only 15 issues, the anthology carved a niche in British comics, delivering a blend of chilling and comedic tales. The new reprint preserves every storyline and cover from the original run, minus the advertisements, giving fans a chance to experience the series exactly as it was.
Rebellion’s decision to revive this collection coincides with their broader strategy to spotlight forgotten British comics. Their archival approach has raised hopes that other classics, like Starlord or Misty, could soon return. Senior editor Keith Richardson expressed Rebellion’s excitement, crediting overwhelming public enthusiasm for the reprint’s green light.
A Classic Wrapped in Controversy
Fleetway originally published Scream! during a turbulent time, navigating societal backlash tied to the “video nasties” controversy. As pressure mounted, Fleetway merged the horror anthology into its popular Eagle series, effectively ending Scream! in September 1984. Despite the series’ short run, its unique approach—marrying macabre elements with humor—left an indelible mark on fans.
The Future of British Horror Comics
The re-release, scheduled for late November, aligns with Rebellion’s larger efforts to revive the spirit of classic British comics. Available through the 2000 AD and Treasury of British Comics webshops, the collection also offers a glimpse into the work of celebrated creators, including Alan Moore, John Wagner, and Cam Kennedy.
This reprint marks a triumphant return for Scream! and fuels anticipation for future archival projects. As excitement builds among fans, Rebellion’s commitment to preserving the legacy of British horror comics continues to grow stronger.
