DC Studios Eyes Aaron Pierre, Stephan James for Lanterns Series

By August TalesDC Studios has narrowed the competition for its much-anticipated “Lanterns” HBO series. According to a recent THR report, Aaron Pierre and Stephan James are vying for the role of John Stewart. Where the two actors stand in the selection process remains hazy. Yet, rumors indicate a decision may occur by the weekend’s conclusion.

Aaron Pierre, fresh off a successful role in Netflix’s 2024 action film Rebel Ridge, is one contender. Critics extolled his performance in the film. Pierre’s bright career features a lead role in 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King, and a part in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2021 thriller Old.

Lanterns: Inside the Casting Controversy

Stephan James, known for his gripping portrayal of Jesse Owens in the 2016 sports biopic Race, is another strong contender. Notable roles include 2018’s If Beale Street Could Talk, 2019’s 21 Bridges, and the 2023 MGM+ sci-fi thriller series Beacon 23.

Turning our Focus to Lanterns

Regardless of the final decision, the chosen actor will partner with Kyle Chandler, who recently signed on to play Hal Jordan. According to THR, HBO plans to commence filming between January and June next year, so we can anticipate more news shortly.

Taking the Lead Behind the Scenes

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark), Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen), and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) take the helm as executive producers of Lanterns, with Lindelof and King also collaborating on the script. HBO gave the show a direct-to-series order last June 2024, over a year after the 8-episode project’s initial announcement in January 2023.

The series will explore the adventures of new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan. The duo, serving as intergalactic cops, find themselves embroiled in a dark, earthbound mystery as they probe a murder in America’s heartland.
