Alien: Romulus – Breaking Down the High-Stakes Survival
Fans of the now 45-year-old Alien franchise know one rule: don’t get attached to characters. The notorious Xenomorphs have a knack for turning a full cast into a few desperate survivors. In the original Alien film, only Ellen Ripley and her cat Jones survived the labyrinthine horrors of the Nostromo. By the time we reached Aliens, the survivors dwindled to Ripley, Newt, Bishop, and Hicks. However, even that small group didn’t make it past the opening credits of the third film, with three of them meeting untimely deaths during cryo-sleep. So, it’s no surprise that Alien: Romulus sticks to the franchise’s tried-and-true formula: a high body count with few survivors. Let’s break down what happens to the ill-fated crew.
Xenomorph 1, Navarro 0
The crew of the Corbelan makes the unfortunate decision to awaken slumbering alien facehuggers. These insidious creatures, once stirred, waste no time seeking a host to infest. Navarro, a cool-headed pilot, becomes their target. Alien fans know that once a facehugger implants its eggs, it’s just a countdown to a gruesome chest-burster exit. Navarro, despite his calm demeanor, becomes another victim in the Xenomorph’s relentless path.
Bjorn’s Acidic End
Next on the chopping block is Bjorn, Navarro’s significant other. With a thick accent and a grudge against the sentient android Andy, Bjorn doesn’t win many favors. Unfortunately, his fate is sealed when he encounters a regenerating Xenomorph. Bjorn meets a particularly nasty end, courtesy of the creature’s acidic blood. His demise is both swift and unpleasant, as the Xenomorph leaves nothing but destruction in its wake.
Tyler’s Brave but Short-Lived Rescue
Tyler, another member of the crew, faces his doom when he attempts to rescue his sister, Kay, from the deadly Xenomorph. His brave but ultimately futile rescue mission ends when he is impaled by the Xenomorph’s tail. Dragged into the creature’s lair, Tyler meets a grisly death, proving once again that heroics rarely pay off in the Alien universe.
Kay’s Tragic and Horrifying Fate
Kay’s story is perhaps the most tragic. Her tale involves an unfortunate pregnancy and a dangerous experiment with the Prometheus formula. This combination leads to the birth of a terrifying hybrid offspring. Kay becomes the unwilling maternity host for this monstrosity, which ultimately drains her of life. Her death is a haunting reminder of the franchise’s ability to blend horror with deep emotional tragedy.
Rook’s Short-Lived Survival
Rook, one of Weyland-Yutani’s synthetic creations, works in the Romulus lab. Despite his best efforts, his survival is short-lived. The Xenomorph bisects Rook in a gruesome encounter, and his end comes when Jackson’s Star’s rings tear apart the space station. Rook’s death serves as another example of the relentless and unforgiving nature of the Xenomorphs.
Rain and Andy: The Last Survivors
Finally, we meet the last survivors, Rain and her synthetic brother, Andy. The Xenomorph leaves Andy on the brink of ‘synthetic death,’ but the pair manage to escape aboard the Corbelan. In a final act of defiance, they destroy Kay’s hybrid offspring and attempt to reach safer territory in cryo-pods. However, in the Alien franchise, pleasant dreams are never guaranteed. Their survival raises the haunting question: can anyone truly escape the nightmares that follow in the wake of the Xenomorphs?
