Super Cat Aids John Constantine
By August Tales
From his inaugural appearance in Swamp Thing, John Constantine has been an aficionado of unlikely alliances. Over time, this Hellblazer has intertwined his fate with that of angels, demons, rival sorcerers, and superheroes. Yet, it seems the surprising collaboration in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #17 takes the cake.
The Unlikely Detective
In a narrative penned by Zipporah Smith with visual storytelling by Mike Norton, Petsurrection commences. Here, our supernatural detective takes on the mantle of dog catcher. Why, you ask? Amateur magic has caused an infestation of zombie dogs reincarnated from dearly departed pets. These once-loved creatures pose a threat to their bereaved owners.
Displayed in splendid detail by Norton, Pet Sematary transformed into a living game isn’t Constantine’s cup of tea. Nonetheless, turning undead animals back to the nether isn’t exactly a challenging use of his capabilities but it’s certainly lucrative. When the dark magic begins contorting the zombie creatures, however, John finds himself dancing on thin ice. Just as he begins to lose control, help arrives.
Cat to the Rescue
Against all odds, Constantine’s rescue comes in the form of a flying feline. Specifically, it’s Supergirl’s pet cat Streaky that swoops in, much to John’s dismay. His well-known cat allergy certainly doesn’t make this unlikely savior welcome. The supposed annoyance doesn’t stop there. Streaky continues to follow John, attempting to showcase a peculiar amulet. John initially rebuffs this, oblivious to the fact that Streaky defends him from numerous undead creatures trailing him.
Forced into direct action, Streaky resorts to a dramatic display of the problem at hand. Using John’s murder board and an assortment of push-pins, Streaky points out that John himself is inadvertently the rallying force behind the zombie uprising. This unexpected twist remains shrouded in mystery as we wonder how Streaky pieced together this puzzling scenario. Regardless, it is indeed the most unprecedented pairing in the annals of John Constantine’s team-ups.
One thing’s for sure, Batman: The Brave and the Bold #17 is a must-own issue for comics aficionados. Available at comic shops globally, this issue is waiting to entertain – don’t miss out! Now, will John learn to love his newfound feline partnership? Only time will tell.
