Big Step Forward for the Just Cause Movie

The Scorpion Strikes Sooner: Just Cause Film Takes a Giant Leap Forward

Fans might not have to wait much longer for "The Scorpion" to hit theaters. Video game adaptations are exploding onto screens everywhere, with recent buzz about a "Sleeping Dogs" film starring Simu Liu and a "Beyond Two Souls" TV series with Elliot Page. Also, the live-action "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" is on the horizon. While many of these projects are still in pre-production, one has taken a significant leap forward. Back in May, Universal Pictures confirmed their plan to bring "Just Cause" to the big screen, helmed by "Blue Beetle’s" Ángel Manuel Soto. Now, a new development has surfaced.

Aaron Rabin Joins Just Cause, Giving New Life to the Project

According to TheWrap, Aaron Rabin, known for crafting thrillers like "Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan," will write the "Just Cause" adaptation. Though this marks Rabin’s first venture into video game movies, he’s no stranger to action. Rabin co-wrote "Nobody 2" with "John Wick" screenwriter Derek Kolstad, Umair Aleem, and Bob Odenkirk. His expertise in adaptations primes audiences for an epic escapade with Rico Rodriguez.

Expectations are high as Ángel Manuel Soto steers this adaptation for Universal Studios. After all, the "Just Cause" film journey has been quite the ride since 2010. Hints of adapting "Just Cause 3" were dropped in 2015, only to fizzle out. Fans rejoiced in 2017 when "San Andreas" director Brad Peyton was tapped, with Jason Momoa poised as hero Rico Rodriguez. Fast forward to 2020, and Michael Dowse from "8-Bit Christmas" stepped in for Peyton, yet updates stalled—until now.

The Role of Rico Rodriguez Remains a Mystery

Extensive casting details remain elusive. Jason Momoa, previously linked to the project, might not reprise his role. This development follows his casting as Lobo in "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow." It’s noteworthy, however, that he just wrapped filming on "The Wrecking Crew," directed by Soto. This timing suggests "Just Cause" production may ramp up sooner than anticipated.

Plot details are still under lock and key, but the game series’ essence promises thrilling adventures. "Just Cause" debuted in 2006, starring Rico Rodriguez as he dismantles corrupt regimes worldwide. Celebrated for its open-world allure and innovative gameplay, the series won hearts with its over-the-top sandbox style. The last installment, "Just Cause 4" in 2018, faced mixed reviews from fans and critics alike. Yet, with Aaron Rabin now on board and Soto’s availability, this adrenaline-charged movie could finally meet eager audiences.
