25 Years Later: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Journey & Costume Evolution
Slipping Through The Pages: The X-Men Film Not As Comic Accurate As Their Book
Forget gold. The premier X-Men movie now looks like your grandma’s crochet pattern—old, but charmingly nostalgic. It’s closing in on being a quarter-century old, almost a classic. Back then, it was futuristic and audacious, a leap from Marvel comic book to big screen. Today, it lacks the vibrant dazzle of modern superhero movies. The X-Men wore off-duty black leather, not their colorful comic-book costumes.
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Wore Leather, Not Spandex
This makes sense after Hugh Jackman’s recent exclusive with The New York Times. Discussing his comeback as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine, Jackman fondly recalled his first encounter with Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president. Feige, then a Hollywood rookie, impressed as a producer on the original X-Men film.
Jackman remembers Feige as a “standup chap” who went all out to welcome him. Ironically, Jackman’s role was more a formality because director Bryan Singer wanted Dougray Scott for Wolverine. Jackman’s chances were slim, but fate intervened when Scott exited due to extended production on Mission: Impossible II. Jackman stepped in, and his bond with Feige grew over their shared love for Wolverine comics—a forbidden passion on the X-Men set.
Comic Subterfuge on Set
Feige became Jackman’s secret comic supplier, slipping him books covertly since Singer disliked them on set. Jackman believed Singer feared comic familiarity might lead to caricature performances. Ryan Reynolds, Jackman’s co-star in Deadpool & Wolverine, found Singer’s decision “curious.”
So, if you’ve wondered why Jackman didn’t wear a yellow and blue spandex suit until now, there’s your answer. Deadpool & Wolverine premieres in theaters on July 26, offering another chance to see Marvel’s sly fox in action.
Marvel Comics: The Unseen Stars of The MCU
Many popular Marvel comics will never make it into the MCU due to copyright issues. With a bit more subterfuge, we might see them someday. Their absence is a matter of some marvel.
