Luca Guadagnino to Direct New American Psycho Film
By August Tales
In an exciting development for film enthusiasts, a new version of American Psycho is in the works. Luca Guadagnino, renowned for his boundary-pushing films, is in talks with Lionsgate to direct this fresh adaptation. The original novel by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1991, became a cult classic after the 2000 film starring Christian Bale as the infamous Patrick Bateman.
A Stellar Team Assembled
Scott Z. Burns, known for work like Contagion and The Bourne Ultimatum, is penning the script. His recent project, the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations, stars powerhouses such as Meryl Streep and Edward Norton. Frensey Films is on board for production, with Sam Pressman stepping in as the executive producer. His father, Edward Pressman, produced the 2000 version, continuing a family legacy.
Lionsgate is enthusiastic about this collaboration. “We’re thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” stated Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s chair. “Luca is brilliant and the perfect visionary for a new interpretation.”
A Director Unafraid of Controversy
Guadagnino’s reputation is built on exploring taboo subjects. He debuted with The Protagonist in 1999 and gained acclaim with Call Me By Your Name in 2017. This partnership with Timothée Chalamet led to another creation, Bones and All, blending horror and romance. These experiences make him an intriguing choice for American Psycho.
The 2000 film ranks high as a contemporary horror classic. Its mix of satire, horror, and comedy critiques consumerism with a sharp edge. Audiences were divided; some appreciated the satire, while others found the violence excessive. Regardless, it became a cult favorite, featuring stars like Reese Witherspoon and Willem Dafoe.
Guadagnino’s Continued Creativity
Recently, Guadagnino collaborated with Amazon on Challengers, featuring Zendaya. This spring release shows his versatile storytelling skills, which he brings to his next project, Queer. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, it stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, offering a compelling narrative based on William S. Burroughs’ novel.
“Bringing Burroughs’ novel to life is an honor,” commented Craig and Guadagnino. “Partnering with A24, a trailblazing studio, makes this journey truly special.”
With American Psycho, Guadagnino promises to deliver yet another film that challenges the status quo. As anticipation builds, fans can expect an innovative approach to this classic tale. This project is shaping up to be a must-watch for both new audiences and long-time fans.
