DC Comics Unveils ‘Absolute DC’: A New Universe Learned from Past Mistakes
Once upon a not-so-distant comic book era, DC Comics took a bold leap with its New 52 relaunch. While it initially captured attention, the reboot eventually stumbled. Now, armed with hard-earned lessons, DC is ready to dive back in with DC All In. This time, the classic DC universe remains intact while a brand-new one emerges alongside it. Joshua Williamson, the mastermind behind Superman, and Scott Snyder, the creative force behind Batman and Dark Nights Metal, broke the news.
A New Direction with ‘Absolute DC’
Scott Snyder introduced ‘Absolute DC’, a new alternative universe where familiar DC superheroes are reimagined in unexpected ways. This approach echoes Marvel’s Ultimate Comics from the early 2000s. Snyder will lead Absolute Batman, promising a version of the Dark Knight so imposing that gym enthusiasts everywhere will be put to shame. These universes will coexist, with the classic one receiving a steady flow of creativity, avoiding another traumatic reboot.
The Twist: Darkseid’s Overarching Plot
A twist lies in how DC Absolute connects back to the classic DCU with an overarching plot involving Darkseid. The regular universe thrives on ‘Superman energy’, a concept clarified in the mini-series Doomsday Clock. In contrast, the Absolute universe runs on a darker, grittier ‘Darkseid energy’. Our heroes here are edgier, recast as underdogs who must toughen up and be resourceful, perhaps even hitting the ‘Absolute DC’ gym.
Upcoming Releases and Teasers
In October, the phantom of DC All-In will be unleashed with an 80-page flip book. Partly sketched by Wonder Woman artist Daniel Sampere and Wes Craig, it delves into Darkseid’s perspective. The ongoing summer crossover event, Absolute Power, sets the stage by humanizing Darkseid into ‘the greatest villain of DC Universe’. A new era for the Justice League will dawn, led by Superman.
On the team front, Joshua Williamson continues to weave magic on the monthly Superman series, now with World’s Finest artist Dan Mora. A teaser hints at a mysterious new Superwoman, who resembles Lois Lane. Just as tech companies unveil new products, Comic-Con will feature introductions of creative teams for both classic titles and the new Absolute series.
Anticipation Builds for DC All-In
Every DC fan now eagerly awaits this new reality where superheroes don darker auras and embrace their underdog status. DC All-In promises a beautiful mess, renewing itself from past mistakes.
