Ghost Rider ’44 Shreds WWII Scene

WWII Ghost Rider’s Early Adventures Unveiled in Upcoming Hellhunters Series

Article by August Tales

Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson caused quite a stir in the recent revitalization of the Incredible Hulk series. Johnson wove a character into this universe that got the fans talking — Sergeant Sal Romero, better known as GHOST RIDER ’44. Now, with artist Adam Gorham joining him, Johnson plans to jump back in time to recount Romero’s adventures in a 5-issue series called Hellhunters, launching this December.

In these pages, Romero is not the only character from the World War II era making a comeback. Fans can also look forward to seeing Peggy Carter, Bucky Barnes, and Wolverine again.

Both Jonas Scharf and Taurin Clarke have their hands on this project, creating the main and variant covers respectively.

Contextualizing Ghost Rider ’44

Ghost Rider ’44 is reawakened in the current day “when the monsters come.” Meanwhile, during World War II, these monsters were rampant, one of them being Felix Bruckner, a Nazi officer who mysteriously transformed. A demonic army under Bruckner’s command instigates Romero to seize his new supernatural powers and challenge the war’s course.

Beside him, some of Marvel’s most beloved superheroes fought during WWII. Together with Wolverine, Nick Fury, Peggy Carter and Bucky Barnes, Ghost Rider ’44 joins the battlefront. The series will also feature Soldier Supreme, an exciting addition from Jason Aaron’s Avengers.

The Birth of a New Ghost Rider

As Romero descends into Nazi-occupied Europe in 1944, Bruckner plays host to an unparalleled evil. Their violent encounter results in the birth of GHOST RIDER ’44. Romero is hell-bent on getting back at Bruckner and his Nazi army. However, he’s also on a mission to prevent mankind from a total wipeout.

For Johnson, Ghost Rider ’44 is the crown jewel of his Hulk series. “The ‘War Devil’ arc would never have been his last appearance,” he assured. Now, due to an overwhelming fan response, Johnson and Gorham are delivering the origin of Ghost Rider ’44 — narrating the forgotten tale of “the toughest, bloodiest, scariest, Nazi-killers” of WWII, the HELLHUNTERS.”

Speaking about the upcoming series, Gorham couldn’t hide his excitement. His aim with Hellhunters is to blend horror, superhero antics, and hard-boiled pulp into one gripping tale. Gorham is pushing his limits on this project striving for an intense, bloodcurdling action that would leave fans awed and craving more.
