Meet the All-New Venom Host in Marvel Comics
By August Tales
When Eddie Brock merges with the alien outfit of Spider-Man, the result is Venom. Driven by a shared dislike for both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, this scorned duo morphs into a symbiotic supervillain with a protective side – the Lethal Protector. Over time, the Venom symbiote enslaved many hosts, including Flash Thompson (in the guise of Agent Venom), and Mac Gargan/Scorpion (as Venom and the Dark Avengers’ Sinister Spider-Man). Even Eddie’s son, Dylan, had a stint as a Venom host.
The real twist, however, lays in the unveiling of an all-new host in Al Ewing and Carlos Gómez’s “All-New Venom.” The pressing question – who could they be?
The Hunt for a New Venom Host
Riding the wave of the five-issue saga of Ewing’s “Venom War” – which terminates in the introduction of the all-new Venom – is the creation of a Venom that transcends Eddie Brock. Keen to keep their identity a secret, Marvel tantalizingly suggests the all-new Venom could be “the Journalist, the Terrorist, the Sidekick, or even the Mayor.” Intrigued? Let’s delve into the suspects.
“We’re taking a step away from the grand cosmic elements, focusing on a more intimate character-driven story with lots of ground-level super-heroic action,” hints Ewing. The aim is clear: offer a compelling combination of traditional superhero narratives with fresh twists.
As Dylan Brock ventures in pursuit of the new host, he jostles with A.I.M. and the Symbiote Squad. The line-up of suspects include:
Suspect #1: The Journalist (Robbie Robertson)
Before being promoted to the Daily Bugle’s head honcho, Robbie Robertson tried to debunk the illegal activities of his former schoolmate Lonnie Lincoln. Lincoln went on to embody Tombstone, the new Kingpin of Crime. An attempt on the life of Robbie’s son Randy, masterminded by rival mobster Hammerhead, resulted in him being critically injured, leading Robbie to question his sources of power.
Suspect #2: The Terrorist (Madame Masque)
The conclusion of the Gang War unleashed an unanticipated twist – a battle between Madame Masque and the Beetle. The aftermath reveals an army brewed by Madame Masque who masterfully controlled the string of events resulting in her defeat. Could the symbiote be Madame’s ultimate mask, and her means for retribution?
Suspect #3: The Sidekick (Rick Jones)
Former sidekick to the Hulk and Captain America, Rick Jones embodied several heroic identities – Captain Marvel, A-Bomb, and even the blue-skinned abomination battling the Red Hulk. Ewing plausibly questions, “Has the sidekick now graduated to main hero?”
Suspect #4: The Mayor (Luke Cage)
Former Power Man and current NYC mayor, Luke Cage, has endured his share of tribulations. His hardy skin and experience as the leader of New Avengers and Thunderbolts may make him the ultimate candidate for the Venom host role.
With the release of “All-New Venom #1” slated for December 4, fans eagerly await clues to the identity of the new host. Will their speculations be rewarded or refuted? Only time will tell.
