McFarlane Toys’ Latest Spawn Edition: Review

Call of Duty Spawn Figures Unveil

McFarlane Toys, notorious for regurgitating the same bodies for their Call of Duty Spawn figures, is now appearing to break new ground. Have you noticed anything unique in the promotional image of the first Spawn figure? There’s a whiff of fresh design in the air, and it smells a lot like cloth.

Sensing a Fabric Revolution

What’s peeking out beneath the Spawn figure could indeed be a cloth and wired cape, fulfilling fervent fan wishes. Spawn’s costume, a living symbiote, is long overdue for some posable attributes. Sure, McFarlane has flirted with flexibility in Batman and Superman capes. However, until now, Todd’s brainchild seemed to be left in the stiffening lurch.

But don’t squint just yet. Our sharp-eyed crew spotted what could be a tiny bit of wire peeping out from the hem. Yet, this is a company that once passed off textured plastic as cloth, deceiving our unsuspecting gazes. The product description conveniently omits any reference to the cape.

The Caped-Crusader Illusion

Not to mention, it’s not the mammoth cape that fans crave. It is the same size as the former rigid plastic cape of Mortal Kombat Spawn. Still, we can at least be hopeful that this is a push towards a more flexible future. Shop with your eyes wide open though. Maybe even delay that online pre-order until you can see it hands-on under the store’s unforgiving light.

If you’ve got $29.99 to spare, you not only bag the possibly-caped Call of Duty Spawn but also five guns in the deal. A steal, isn’t it? Especially when you consider the Tactical Spawn, like a jealous sibling, gets only four guns plus a headset. One of his weapons even seems to mimic the outrageously long-barreled gun brandished by a notorious clown-themed criminal.

Awaiting Confirmation on Capeness

Time will tell whether our suspicions are correct. What we can confidently say is we earnestly hope for a fabric-and-wire revolution. If successful, perhaps Todd will awaken to the clamour for a larger, flowing cape on his signature creation. Now, wouldn’t that truly be superbly Spawn-tacular?
