Nosferatu’s Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Streak Continues

A Dark Legend Rises Again: Robert Eggers’ Bold Take on Nosferatu

Once a production designer in the music industry, Robert Eggers has since carved a niche in film. His transition to directing brought success with unique horror sagas and mythological narratives. The latest, Nosferatu, stands as a testament to his growing legacy.

Nosferatu, his fourth film, stays true to Eggers’ thrilling directorial track. Released amidst the festive season, the movie garnered rave reviews. Maintaining an impressive Rotten Tomatoes streak, all of Eggers’ cinematic creations boast the Certified Fresh badge, with audience approval soaring over 60%. The timeless horror classic has, once again, enthralled viewers.

The Voyage of an Acclaimed Director

Eggers burst onto the scene with 2015’s The Witch. Featuring Anya Taylor-Joy, the film secured critical acclaim and commercial triumph. Debuting at Sundance and grossing $40 million on a mere $4 million budget, it charmed critics with a 91% score. Though the audience rating lingered at 60%, it suffices for a positive nod.

In 2019, The Lighthouse emerged, a period thriller with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. While not a financial juggernaut, its critical reception was undeniable. Earning $18 million from an $11 million budget, it boasts a 90% critics’ score and a decent 72% audience rating. These successes further solidified Eggers’ burgeoning reputation.

Navigating Challenges in Cinematic Waters

Eggers ventured into epic territory with 2022’s The Northman, though financial returns lagged. Despite its massive budget, it barely matched its expenses with a $69.9 million return. Yet, critics bestowed upon it a 90% approval, adding another Certified Fresh to his collection. Meanwhile, audiences showed modest enthusiasm with a 64% score.

Nosferatu strides on with an 87% critics’ rating and the highest audience score to date at 76%. These numbers reflect Eggers’ continued mastery over mythic tales.

Robert Eggers Wanted Count Orlok to Be Grotesque

Eggers injected his distinctive vision into Nosferatu, drawing inspiration from the 1922 German masterpiece. Starring Bill Skarsgård, brother of Northman star Alexander Skarsgård, he reimagines the grotesque vampire. Orlok deviates from conventions, being eerie and visceral rather than alluring—drinking blood from the heart, not the neck.

"We’ve reached a point where vampires aren’t frightening," Eggers muses. "Thus, I reversed that trend. Historically, vampires induced sheer fear." He remarks, "We deserve a truly terrifying entity once more."

Nosferatu, now showing in theaters, affirms Eggers’ prowess in horror storytelling.
