Preview of NYX #1 Establishes a New Status Quo…

Reimagining NYX: A Bold New Chapter

The acclaimed series NYX has been dusted off, polished up, and is ready to re-enter the narrative fray. As a pivotal piece of Marvel’s From the Ashes initiative, this formerly contentious series, renowned for stark tales of destitute Manhattan Mutants and introducing X-23 (Laura Kinney), has been reimagined. The revitalized narrative stars Laura, now dubbed Wolverine, and Ms. Marvel, thrust into a new breed of X-Men comic thrill.

The creative minds behind the renewed NYX series include authors Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, and the artistic prowess of Francisco Mortarino. They delve into the tribulations and triumphs of five teenage Mutants navigating New York City. Initially, the narrative spotlight will focus on Kamala Khan, who rushes headlong into her first day in a dual-credit Mutant Studies program, literally bumping into Sophie Cuckoo of the Stepford Cuckoos.

Ms. Marvel and the Hurdles of NYX

Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, has recently been pushed to her limits by the dynamic and often dire circumstances in the Marvel universe. Balancing a full plate, Kamala, bearing both Inhuman and Mutant genes, stands as an outsider within both social circles. These struggles, compounded by regular mutant-world challenges, make life extraordinary for Ms. Marvel. NYX promises a fresh perspective and harsh yet thrilling adventures for Kamala Khan.

During an interview with Polygon, Lanzing shed light on the fresh challenges and storyline that NYX promises. “Teen superhero books have a unique flavor to them; their bonding doesn’t revolve around fending off an apocalyptic event. Instead, these characters discover common ground in their shared experiences, in and out of school. It’s a lot closer to a more grounded teen drama than you’d think,” remarked Lanzing.

Action and New Adversaries

Action junkies, fear not. While these characters bond over classes and homework, there’ll be no shortage of action. Upcoming issues will witness Laura Kinney assuming the mantle of a dark avenger within the New York underworld. A new adversary, the Krakoan, is also set to introduce a distinct threat to post-Krakoan-style mutant communities.
