Black Cat and Kang: A Heist Across Time
Felicia Hardy, better known as the Black Cat, finds herself on an unexpected path. A time traveler approached her with an offer she can’t ignore. It might sound surreal to most, but not to someone who’s bargained with the devil. This fascinating twist unfolds in “Avengers #23,” meticulously crafted by writer Jed MacKay. The issue leaps to life under artist Farid Karamai and colorist Federico Blee. MacKay’s clever narrative infusion electrifies this quirky action story, adding depth to both heroes and villains.
The Unlikely Team-Up
Kang the Conqueror, a master of time, seeks out Felicia’s expertise. With the ability to roam the timeline, why does Kang need the Black Cat’s help? She’s a rogue, he’s volatile. Yet the lure of a time-heist, entangling with the Avengers, is impossible to resist. There’s more at stake than just the challenge. This venture promises a substantial gain, though its true nature remains tantalizingly uncertain.
Balancing Act: Plot and Character
MacKay, renowned for his Black Cat storytelling, brings her into the Avengers’ world. However, the plot struggles to reach the sophistication of her solo stories. While the narrative delves into the personalities involved, it fails to fully engage the formidable team she faces. As a result, this crossover seems less potent than Felicia’s standalone escapades. Still, the exploration of her character shines, even if the team dynamic falters.
Engaging Visuals and Dramatic Flair
Gatecrasher and her Technet join the fray, characters originally shaped by Alan Davis. Capturing Davis’s iconic style is no small feat, but Karamai rises to the task. His artwork delivers dynamic action, with Black Cat and Kang maneuvering through the chaos. Powerful panels punctuate the issue, especially when Kang strikes an imposing presence. Despite the dramatic poses appearing twice, they make a strong impression.
Despite some narrative shortcomings, the combination of Black Cat and Kang delivers an engaging spectacle. This Avengers encounter might echo past tales, but it’s still a thrill to see Felicia and Kang on the same page.
