For some time, Morfydd Clark, who portrays Galadriel, has been dropping hints about an unexpected smooch in this season of The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. Predictably, fandom went into overdrive. Every fan group swooped in, claiming their favorite duo was now canon.

However, the ironic twist came with the reveal of the kisser-couple— two characters nobody anticipated.

Plot Twists and Surprise Kisses

It turns out, Elrond and Galadriel shared the unexpected kiss, causing shockwaves among viewers. Taking place inside Adar’s tent, the intimate exchange occurred as Elrond prepared to let Galadriel face her impending doom. A surprise to all, but was it romantic, or a smart move?

Kisses and Warfare Tactics

One might wonder, does this kiss indicate underlying feelings between Elrond and Galadriel? Almost certainly not. The explanation reveals cunning wartime strategy rather than newfound love. When Adar proposed to exchange Galadriel for her elven Ring of Power, Elrond was compelled to act. Employing distraction as a tactic, he held a flabbergasted Adar and Uruk’s attention with the distracting smooch, allowing him to slip Galadriel a pin from his cloak. Galadriel, being the sharp elf she is, knows her way around a lock.

What Does the Kiss Tell Us?

While this seemingly outlandish kiss doesn’t expose anything new about Galadriel or Elrond, it may offer insight into Adar. It seems Adar’s soft-hearted nature allowed Elrond to bid Galadriel farewell, adding a different shade to his character.

The most significant evidence against a supposed romantic entanglement lies within Tolkien’s lore. Elrond later marries Galadriel’s daughter, Celebrían, sailing into potentially uncomfortable waters if a prior romance existed between him and Galadriel.

Celebrían—A Key Player

Celebrían is the offspring of Galadriel and Celeborn. She ties the knot with Elrond and conceives twins, Elladan and Elrohir, and a daughter, Arwen. Celebrían’s narrative is steeped in tragedy; she suffers torment at the hands of orcs and, although rescued, her spirit remains shattered. She leaves Middle-earth, long before the Fellowship of the Rings, seeking solace in her homeland Valinor.

The Rings of Power may or may not incorporate aspects of her story.

Where Is Celebrían in The Rings of Power?

The current narrative has only introduced us to Celeborn, Galadriel’s partner, who went missing during the War of Wrath. Celebrían’s appearance would depend on whether she was born before or after these events.

It would be interesting to see how the storyline accommodates the dynamics between Galadriel and Elrond, given their noticeable fondness for each other.

While rumors abounded that the character Mirdania was secretly Celebrían, her death in the second season debunked that theory. Excitedly, we anticipate her appearance on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and how future character developments will unfold.
