On a fateful morning in July 2019, Aoba walked into Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1. Armed with gasoline, he set ablaze what would become one of Japan’s darkest days. Thirty-six lives were lost, and 34 were scarred, marking one of the country’s deadliest mass murders. This heinous act left a profound void, deeply felt across the global animation community.

The Voices of the Aggrieved

In the aftermath, families of the victims grappled with insurmountable grief. NHK reported emotional responses from these families. One father, who lost his son, a talented animator, expressed mixed sentiments. He pondered if Aoba’s withdrawal was his way of attempting to shoulder responsibility. Conversely, a bereaved mother wants to grasp Aoba’s rationale but struggles to see a fitting punishment beyond the death sentence for extinguishing 36 souls.

The Courtroom Drama Unfolds

Aoba’s trial in 2022 revealed a disconcerting motive. He claimed his attack was a reaction to alleged plagiarism by the studio. His defense argued mental instability, but the Kyoto District Court dismissed this plea. The court, resolute, sentenced Aoba to death in 2023.

A Legacy Undeterred by Tragedy

Despite the catastrophe, Kyoto Animation remains resilient. In 2021, the studio released Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, with the late Yoshiji Kigami honored among its contributors.
