The Acolyte’s Small Fanbase Targets YouTubers Post Show Cancellation
By August Tales
Star Wars series, The Acolyte, finds itself buried under an avalanche of cancelation backlash. Although small in number, The Acolyte’s diehard fans are fiercely defending their beloved series. Their current crusade? An onslaught against YouTubers who they believe contributed to the show’s demise.
The Acolyte’s journey on Disney+ has been a bumpy one, culminating in its abrupt cancelation after just one season. The series stands as the least-watched Star Wars show on the platform, delivering unfortunate viewership ratings.
Meanwhile, Amandla Stenberg, who starred in the show, posted a contentious video. In it, she blamed fans for the series’ downfall. Consequently, her passionate supporters have sprung into action, vowing to take down Star Wars fan accounts on YouTube.
Amandla Stenberg’s Polarizing Remarks
Stenberg’s video caught many off guard, including herself. Indeed, she conceded that the cancelation of The Acolyte wasn’t a “huge shock.” She pointed a critical finger at alt-right and conservative fans for the series’ troubled ride.
As Stenberg noted, the series had been a target of vitriolic fan rage since its inception. Fans spewed hateful language, she claimed, making her job more challenging. Yet, she expressed gratitude to those who vocally supported the beleaguered show. She thanked them for defending the series, affirming their love and appreciation augmented the worth of her role.
Fans on the Frontlines
Stenberg’s supporters have fired off a stern open letter to YouTube. They criticize the platform for allowing channels such as Geeks + Gamers, RK Outpost, and Nerdrotic to persistently harass actors from franchises like Star Wars.
They make a parallel between Stenberg’s experience of online prejudice and the unwarranted harassment faced by fellow Star Wars actors. They’re now calling for YouTube to demonetize content creators engaged in promoting “hate campaigns,” holding them accountable for violating community guidelines against harassment.
Explicitly, they assert that some YouTube channels profit from vitriol aimed primarily at women of color. They urge YouTube to enforce its guidelines, demanding immediate and permanent demonetization of these channels. Wrapping up the letter with a rhetorical flourish, they conclude with the hopeful phrase, “May The Force Be With You.”
What’s particularly interesting is that these supporters should reconsider their strategy. Instead of waging war on YouTube, perhaps they should put the onus on Disney, the one who arguably has more power to affect change. After all, the show’s quality, rather than YouTuber’s opinions, might be the real catalyst for its viewership disaster.
