Writers Disclose That Deadpool Nearly Battled All…

Deadpool & Wolverine: Lost Avengers Scene

There’s no denying that the air is currently buzzing with “Deadpool & Wolverine” fever. This cinematic gift starring Hollywood heavyweights Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds is mesmerizing fans and leaving box offices in the dust all across the globe. Having left no stone unturned to satisfy their insatiable audience, not only did the filmmakers sprinkle countless Easter Eggs throughout the film, they also toyed with some other tantalizing scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor.

Oh, What Could’ve Been

Rumor has it, in the pre-production brainstorming phase, there was an exciting scene that was meant to make it to the final reel but sadly had to bite the dust. This tantalizing incident was none other than a face-to-face showdown between Deadpool and the mighty Avengers, as detailed by the movie’s imaginative writers.

Our heroes of the script, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, exposed some of the movie’s behind-the-scene secrets in a riveting IndieWire interview. Among these revelations was an unforgettable scene, envisioned to feature Deadpool locking horns with the Avengers in his own, inimical style. As the gods of cinematic adventures would have it, this scene remained an unreachable dream.

Reese and Wernick shared, “Very early on, we conceived that scene with all the Avengers present, with Wade (aka Deadpool) showing them who’s boss in his own quirky Deadpool manner.”

Imagined Mayhem, Only Deadpool Style

As the writers embraced honesty hour, they dove deeper into the details of what could have been an epic scene.

A fascinating sneak peek into their brainstorming session exposed Deadpool’s bravado as he would attempt to lift Thor’s hammer, known for determining the worthiness of its holder. In a twisted turn of events, “Peter [Rob Delaney] was in the room, and Peter just casually picked up Thor’s hammer,” revealed Wernick, amidst chuckles from Reese.

Then came Deadpool’s hilarious attempt of trying to get the ever-so-righteous Captain America to drop an F-bomb. If only we got to see the saintly Captain turned rogue!

Avengers Assemble! Just Not This Time.

Despite the potential epicness of Deadpool meeting the Avengers, logistical nightmares including the cost and complex scheduling caused the film to shelve this scene. As our scriveners Reese and Wernick confessed, they had better luck with “Deadpool 2”, where lucky synchronicities of schedule allowed for an X-Men cameo.

To paraphrase Reese, this Avengers concept reminded him of the “We Are the World” documentary challenge of getting legendary musicians Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson all together at once. Life isn’t always cinematic, is it?
