Blerds Battle Demonic Forces in The Horizon Experiment’s Latest Installment
By August Tales
The fourth chapter of The Horizon Experiment, M*therfukin’ Monsters*, is ready to deliver an intense blend of horror and humor. Slated for release in December 2024, this comic brings Black nerd culture, or “Blerds,” to the forefront, placing them in a battle against demonic forces. Inspired by Evil Dead and Shaun of the Dead, the story is set against a Wu-Tang-inspired soundtrack, promising action, comedy, and plenty of gore.
A Bold Twist on Classic Horror
M*therfukin’ Monsters* follows JJ Henry, a nerdy Black kid from Brooklyn, and his crew. They stumble upon a demonic plot led by frat boys attempting to take over the world. This comic stands out by flipping the traditional horror trope, where Black characters often face early death or minor roles. Instead, JJ and his friends emerge as the central heroes, fighting to stop a Grimoire-based apocalypse.
“I wanted to create a space where Blerds and Black witch girls are the main focus,” explains writer J. Holtham. “It’s rare to see Black folks in the lead roles of horror stories, so I aimed to change that.” Holtham’s personal experience growing up in a predominantly white college town informs much of the cultural depth in the story, blending horror with social commentary.
A Dynamic Creative Team Delivers Fresh Visuals
Holtham collaborates with artist Michael Lee Harris, whose visceral artwork brings the chaos to life. “J gave me the freedom to push the limits of gore, action, and cultural identity,” says Harris. Their collaboration results in a visually striking comic, filled with dark humor and kinetic energy. The story’s dynamic lettering, provided by Micah Myers, adds another layer of excitement.
The comic’s editorial team, led by Pornsak Pichetshote and Will Dennis, has praised the bold and fresh approach to horror, describing M*therfukin’ Monsters* as one of the most original comics hitting the market this year.
Expanding The Horizon Experiment
M*therfukin’ Monsters* is part of The Horizon Experiment, a one-shot series that highlights protagonists from marginalized backgrounds. Previous installments like The Manchurian and The Sacred Damned explored espionage and supernatural horror. However, M*therfukin’ Monsters* stands out with its mix of Black culture, horror, and satire. It redefines genre storytelling in comics.
Pornsak Pichetshote, the creative force behind the series, believes this installment is special. “This comic doesn’t look or feel like anything else on the shelves,” he explains. “J and Michael Lee have crafted something that’s both thrilling and culturally significant.”
What to Expect from M*therfukin’ Monsters*
Fans can expect fast-paced action, humor, and horror with a fresh take on survival in a supernatural world. JJ Henry’s journey brings together cultural identity, hip-hop influences, and horror, ensuring readers will be captivated. As the December release date nears, excitement is growing for what promises to be a standout addition to the Horizon Experiment series.
