Emily Bett Rickards is on a mission to give Felicity Smoak, her beloved character from the hit series “Arrow,” the closure she deserves. Initially introduced in the third episode of Arrow’s first season, Felicity was supposed to be a fleeting presence. However, her dynamic character, combined with Rickards’ compelling portrayal, quickly won the hearts of fans. This unexpected reception saw her upgraded from a single episode cameo to a recurring role throughout the first season, and eventually, she became a series regular starting with the second season.
Rickards recently opened up on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast, expressing how Felicity’s character drifted off course in the later seasons. Despite this, Rickards refrains from blaming anyone, revealing instead her desire to steer the character’s narrative toward a more satisfying conclusion. It’s this ambition that fuels her openness to revisiting Felicity once more, possibly through an “Arrow” reunion project such as a TV movie or limited series. Rickards passionately stated, “I want to give Felicity her flowers. There’s more she could have stood up for.”
Ready for a Comeback
Rickards exited as a series regular after the Season 7 finale but returned for the show’s conclusion. Her departure was surprising to fans, yet she remains fond of Felicity, stating her motivation for a return would be solely for the character’s benefit. As Rickards sees it, any future project would serve as an homage to Felicity rather than the fans or the series itself: “I’d be doing it for Felicity. And then everybody else gets it just as a side effect,” she quipped.
Show finale concluded with the Monitor reuniting Felicity and her late husband, Oliver Queen, in a peaceful dimension. This moment aimed for a hopeful catharsis, yet fans felt there was much more to explore. The Arrowverse has proven adaptable, with Stephen Amell making a return as Oliver Queen on “The Flash,” even amid similar narrative hurdles. As Rickards and fans eagerly anticipate Felicity’s honorable return, all seasons of “Arrow” remain available for streaming on Netflix, keeping the legacy of the beloved show alive.
