Black Lightning Creator Publicly Comes Out

Tony Isabella Emerges as Jenny Blake Isabella: A New Chapter Begins

For decades, the name Tony Isabella has echoed through the comic book world. Creator of the iconic Black Lightning, Isabella has penned enthralling tales for both Marvel and DC Comics. Recently, there was a significant personal reveal: Tony introduced herself to the world as Jenny Blake Isabella, a trans woman.

The announcement first appeared on BlueSky on February 9, 2025. Fans were asked to respect Jenny and her family’s privacy, with a promise of a more detailed account soon. True to her word, the official statement was released on her personal blog by February 11.

“At some point, I always envisioned coming out after my long tenure in the comic world,” Isabella shared. “I needed time to digest the experience and the responses it incited.” She expressed deep gratitude for the kind words from her supporters, mentioning how some comments moved her to tears.

The Story Behind Jenny Blake Isabella’s New Name

Jenny Blake Isabella chose her new name with personal significance. She always favored the name Jenny. Meanwhile, Blake honors Dr. Donald Blake, the original alter ego of Marvel’s Thor. As Isabella playfully stated, “Once a Marvel maniac, always a Marvel maniac.”

Curiosity swirled around her professional identity. Would Tony Isabella remain a working moniker? Isabella clarified she’d continue using both names, deciding based on project needs. She gave a nod to DC Comics for honoring her request concerning future credits on Black Lightning works.

“I see ‘Tony Isabella’ as an enduring part of my identity,” Jenny remarked. “It represents significant contributions and accomplishments. I’ll continue to work under both names, honoring my complete story.”

New Projects and Inclusive Narratives

Jenny is actively contributing to Last Kiss Comics, but she has broader ambitions. She’s crafting an independent series featuring a trans teen hero, drawing parallels with Peter Parker. Isabella believes its relatable story will resonate with both queer and straight teens.

Presently, Jenny is seeking the right platform for her series, aiming for a "fair and mutually beneficial agreement" with publishers. This latest venture reflects her vision of inclusive storytelling, charting a fresh course in the ever-evolving world of comics.
