Cartoon Network, Max, and Lion Forge Animation are gearing up for a grand release. The eagerly awaited Iyanu: Child of Wonder animated series debuts on Cartoon Network on April 5th at 9:30 AM ET/PT, and hits Max the following day. A tantalizing teaser trailer, released in October, set the stage for what’s poised to be a major animated event in 2025.
A Vision Fulfilled
Adapted from the graphic novels by Nigerian filmmaker Roye Okupe, Iyanu: Child of Wonder blends vibrant storytelling with cultural depth. Okupe, who hails from Nigeria, steps into the roles of Creator, Executive Producer, and Showrunner, ensuring the story stays true to its roots. Produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, a prominent Black-owned studio in North America, the series promises a fresh perspective in animation.
Set in the mystical kingdom of Yorubaland, young Iyanu discovers her latent divine powers amidst an unfolding threat. Her quest, along with friends Biyi, Toye, and the magical leopard Ekun, unveils secrets of her destiny. The series draws from Nigerian culture, music, and mythology for a rich narrative tapestry not often seen in mainstream animation.
“Bringing this ambitious series to Cartoon Network and Max has been a hero’s journey,” says Michael Ouweleen, President of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. This spring, fans will step into a world teeming with magic and mystery, created over years of dedicated effort.
A Global Cultural Leap
David Steward II, CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment, shares his enthusiasm. The series represents a “major leap forward,” emphasizing culturally rich stories that resonate globally. Optimism runs high that audiences will embrace and celebrate this vibrant tale of wonder and adventure.
The voice cast, composed entirely of African talent, includes Serah Johnson as Iyanu, Okey Jude as adventurer Biyi, and Samuel Kugbiyi as the bookish Toye. Other cast members include Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Stella Damasus, Shaffy Bello, and Ike Ononye.
Beyond Borders
Showmax takes the series to 44 African countries with a premiere set for June 13th. Meanwhile, ITVX will stream it across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland this summer. Executive producers from Lion Forge Entertainment, YouNeek Studios, and other partners ensure a seamless rollout.
The artistic vision of Iyanu: Child of Wonder is a testament to dedication and cultural storytelling, promising a unique animated experience. Audiences worldwide are on the brink of entering a realm where tradition meets adventure, and where stories of wonder linger long after the screen fades to black.
