James Hawes, renowned for his directorial prowess, has been enlisted to helm the first two episodes of the upcoming DCU series, Lanterns. In this anticipated release, the acclaimed actor, Kyle Chandler, will play the iconic Green Lantern Hal Jordan. While John Stewart will also shine prominently, the role hasn’t been filled yet.

Hawes’ resume is stacked with directorial roles in a significant number of popular pieces. He lent his unique touch to six memorable episodes of Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, which stars Gary Oldman. His credits extend to renowned series such as Doctor Who, Merlin, Penny Dreadful, and Black Mirror, among others.

Striding into Feature Film

Hawes ventured into feature film directing with One Life in 2023. This compelling biographical drama showcases the life of British humanitarian Nicholas Winton, breathed to life on screen by Anthony Hopkins. Currently, Hawes is engrossed in an espionage thriller, The Amateur. Set for an April 2025 release, it features a star-studded cast, including Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.

Upcoming DCU Lanterns Series: What We Know

Delving into the heart of Lanterns, the series will follow John Stewart, the new recruit, and the legendary Hal Jordan. These intergalactic law enforcers find themselves enmeshed in an earth-based mystery, demystifying a murder in the American heartland.

A collaborative product of HBO, Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, Lanterns boasts a script by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. While Mundy steers the series as the showrunner, Lindelof and King stay onboard as executive producers.

As for the casting of John Stewart, the speculation has yet to settle. Potentially standing beside Chandler’s Hal Jordan is either Rebel Ridge’s Aaron Pierre or Homecoming’s Stephan James. Josh Brolin was in talks for the role but stepped back. Damson Idris also joined the list of rumored contenders.

Lanterns, still shrouded in suspense, has yet to announce a release date. The expectations are high, and the hype continues to rise, giving us all the more reason to keep a keen eye on this promising DCU series.
