Deadpool & Wolverine Earn ‘Certified Fresh’ Badge on Rotten Tomatoes
Freshly minted and packing heat, Deadpool & Wolverine have officially snagged the “Certified Fresh” badge on Rotten Tomatoes, the estate agents of the all-important land of movie reviews. Shining at the humble altar of numerical validation, the dynamic duo locks in a score of 79. For those not privy to the creepy inner workings of the Tomatometer, the “Certified Fresh” badge demands a score of 75 or more, with significant nods from over 80 critics.
Marvel’s Tender Relationship with Critics
Marvel’s cinematic exploits have somewhat of a tender relationship with the critical world. Although they’ve had their share of green-scaling hits, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wagging its tail at 82 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever purring at 84, some haven’t quite hit the salad days. Movies like The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Eternals fell shy of the fresh mark. Seems appropriate that Deadpool & Wolverine doesn’t miss a chance to take cheeky jabs at Marvel’s expense.
An X-tra Bumpy Ride
Who can forget the unhappy parting of Fox’s X-Men franchise, with The New Mutants scoring a meek 36 and Dark Phoenix crashing at 22 on the Tomato scale? It’s the kind of score that prompts a “better luck next time” pat on the back. However, the franchise also had its fair share of plaudits, with seven films clenching the “Certified Fresh” badge, including X-Men, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Standing
While Deadpool & Wolverine dances around the 79 score, it may well end up being the begrudged runt of its own litter. The first Deadpool was an 85-getter and Deadpool 2 managed to track 84. Let’s not bring up the solo Wolverine films, where only Logan made Certified Fresh status while X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine had to make peace with scores of 38 and 71.
According to Metacritic, Deadpool & Wolverine meanders in the “mixed or average” territory with a score of 54. Average, maybe. But worth a bag of popcorn and a ticket? You be the judge when Deadpool & Wolverine hits the screens this Friday.
A Stroll Down Awkward Alley
The Fox X-Men franchise was a two-decade stint and 13-film saga that gave us awesome highs, desperate lows, and a good number of awkward moments.
