Hanging by a Thread
Fury dangles a suspect over West Adams Street, seeking vital information. Despite her determination, the man remains tight-lipped, forcing her to lean into drastic measures. She’s not alone, though—beside her stands a man in green, both sleuths entangled in a mystery. We’re talking about Green Hornet / Miss Fury #2, crafted by writers Alex Segura and Henry Barajas. The narrative unfolds under the watchful eyes of artist Federico Sorressa and colorist Lesley Atlansky. While the storytelling may falter slightly, the tension and intrigue persist throughout this second issue.
A Trail of Masks
A mysterious killer targets masked men, leaving chaos in their wake. When the Green Hornet arrives at the morgue, a chilling scene awaits him. The lifeless body of John Doyle—known in the shadows as The Zebra—lies there, another victim in a series of murders. With Kato missing, Green Hornet finds himself in an unlikely partnership driven by the quest for answers. Together but not entirely trusting, they plunge deeper into the darkness enveloping the city.
Era Reimagined
Segura and Barajas skillfully weave dual narratives, allowing neither Fury nor Hornet to hog the spotlight. They each investigate the murders from unique angles, showcasing their unique crime-fighting styles. The 1940s setting is authentic yet respectfully understated, thanks to the writers’ deft touch. Often, retro series overindulge in period details. Thankfully, Segura and Barajas keep the historical aspects from overshadowing their narrative focus.
Action and Atmosphere
The action sequences burst onto the page in a vivid yet comprehensible manner. Some punches might land awkwardly, but the pacing keeps readers hooked. Sorressa and Atlansky frame the scenes effectively, though some drama feels a bit exaggerated. However, it’s more or less in tune with the ongoing plot as anticipation builds for issue three. The storytelling may have familiar undertones, yet it’s captivating enough to keep the pages turning.
Distinct Vibes
The series exudes a sense of comfort and familiarity as the plot unfolds. While it may not reinvent the wheel, Segura, Barajas, and their team excel in highlighting the unique qualities of this crime-fighting duo. Miss Fury deserves more spotlight, a deeper dive into her psyche. Yet, the constraints of a crossover series are limiting. Dynamite Comics has done justice to her character in the past, hinting there’s more to explore beyond this partnership. For now, the tale holds its ground, offering more questions and excitement as the saga progresses.
