Piracy Charts: ‘House of the Dragon’ Reclaims the Throne
In a digital underground dominated by torrents and fan fervor, ‘House of the Dragon’ emerges as the most-pirated show of 2024. This popular ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel snatched the crown back from last year’s leader, HBO’s ‘The Last of Us.’ Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ takes the silver medal, while Disney’s ‘Shōgun’ debuts on the chart in third place.
Return of the Dragons
It’s no surprise that ‘House of the Dragon’ leads the list. After all, ‘Game of Thrones’ previously dominated this space for years. Last year, the absence of Westeros-themed content allowed ‘The Last of Us’ to shine. However, the dragons have flown back into the spotlight, claiming the top spot once again. Unlike two years ago, when ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ posed a challenge, this year’s competition seemed less fierce. Notably, the Tolkien-inspired series didn’t even make it to the top ten. This result hints at an inflation in previous viewership estimates.
Streaming Giants Battle It Out
While HBO basks in its success, Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ secures a strong second place, followed closely by Disney’s ‘Shōgun.’ Other major players include Netflix’s animated hit, ‘Arcane.’ Each of these shows originates from popular streaming platforms. However, ‘The Penguin’ was perhaps the biggest surprise on the list. Landing in fifth place, this series is the latest piece of Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga. It has shattered several streaming records with its unique take on Gotham’s notorious bird villain.
Newcomers Make Their Mark
Amazon Prime’s ‘Fallout’ and ‘Reacher’ continue attracting audiences. Meanwhile, Apple TV+’s ‘Silo’ and Max’s ‘Dune: Prophecy’ have sparked significant interest as fresh entries. Rounding out the top ten is Paramount+’s ‘Halo,’ holding its own with a dedicated fanbase.
This chart solely tracks BitTorrent downloads, barely scratching the surface of the vast piracy universe. Today, most viewers opt for streaming sites, which seldom divulge their viewing statistics. The dark waters of digital piracy continue to surge with untold stories, remaining as elusive as ever.
