Skarsgård’s Journey With Pennywise: An Unfinished Tale
Bill Skarsgård had almost closed the chapter on playing monstrous roles after embodying the eerie Count Orlok in Nosferatu. The gripping transformation was the last nail in his creature-inspired coffin, or so he thought. While chatting on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Skarsgård revealed that during Nosferatu, he felt a shift away from horror characters. However, the winds of change blew when he caught wind of the next venture in the It universe, Welcome to Derry.
A New Dawn for It
The masterminds behind the chaotic charm of Pennywise, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, have devised a captivating prequel. Skarsgård, who has woven close personal ties with the pair, couldn’t resist the allure of Pennywise’s return. He expressed, “And I love them, they’re very close friends, family even,” emphasizing their bond. His role as godfather to Andy’s son only strengthened his decision. Skarsgård was ready to dive back into the haunting world of It.
In May 2024, it became official. Skarsgård would reincarnate Pennywise for HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry, set for a 2025 release. Although specific details about the prequel remain under wraps, the anticipation is palpable. Skarsgård hints that the essence of Pennywise will be “pretty hardcore.”
Nosferatu’s Intensity
Reprising Pennywise might be less challenging than what Skarsgård faced portraying Orlok in Nosferatu. Reflecting on his experiences, Skarsgård shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the extreme shoot of the film’s climax. Wrapped in latex head-to-toe, save for his eyes and feet, Skarsgård pushed the boundaries of endurance. The dedication culminated in a physically taxing final scene executed over 30 takes, which left him exhausted and drenched. It was an arduous and dramatic affair, complete with gore.
Fans can anticipate the chilling preview of Welcome to Derry later this year, while Nosferatu currently haunts theaters. Skarsgård’s monsters continue to enthrall audiences worldwide, proving that some roles are far from done.
