James Gunn Unveils Details about Grillo’s DCU Role

James Gunn spilled the beans on Frank Grillo’s DCU persona, Rick Flag Sr. Grillo is geared up to embody Rick Flag Sr., a significant figure in the upcoming DCU venture of Gunn and Safran. The character is the father of Rick Flag, previously portrayed on screen by Joel Kinnaman in Gunn-directed DCEU Suicide Squad series.
In 2024, fans will get their first taste of Grillo’s character. He will appear via animation in “Creature Commandos”. Rick Flag Sr.’s live-action debut, on the other hand, is set for “Peacemaker Season 2” and “Superman”.
Gunn Teases Morally Complex Character
In a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, Gunn leaked details regarding what audiences should anticipate from the character of Rick Flag Sr. Gunn expressed admiration for Grillo’s handling of the character.
The character’s inclusion in “Superman” was also confirmed by Gunn. He described Rick Flag Sr. as an essential element in “Peacemaker”. He added, “He’s a significant figure in Peacemaker season 2. As we explore this character from different perspectives, complexity unfolds.”
Gunn conveyed, “This character isn’t just a white hat. We see various facets of his character. He’s a moral conundrum. Grillo is someone I’ve known for a bit and yearned to collaborate with. Upon taking over the studio, he was among the first people I spoke to, signaling, ‘we’re going to find something cool for you.’ And now, he’s virtually omnipresent.”
Grillo’s versatility was also acknowledged by Gunn. He mentioned, “Grillo adeptly navigates different genres.” Gunn referred to Grillo’s prowess in delivering both the humor of “Creature Commandos” and the drama of “Peacemaker” and “Superman.”
Star-studded Voice Cast for Creature Commandos
Joining Grillo in the Creature Commandos voice cast are Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoë Chao, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis. Fans should mark their calendars for December 5, 2024, the premiere date for “Creature Commandos” on Max.
