Transitioning to a New Era

James Gunn’s Superman movie is set to tread a different path from its predecessors. Reliable sources assure that this rendition will bear no resemblance to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Eleven years ago, Snyder introduced us to a bloodier, edgier Superman – a formidable counterpoint to past Supermen.

Snyder’s Man of Steel garnered mixed reviews, with criticism levelled at violent scenes and conspicuous character deaths (I’m looking at you, Pa Kent). Subsequent entries into the series, such as Batman vs Superman, proved less popular. Regardless, Snyder rounded out his stint with the DCEU via a four-hour Justice League edition.

A Shift in tone

One such source, better known as ‘scooper’ Daniel RPK, divulges some tantalizing snippets about Gunn’s Superman undertaking. According to a leak, he dubs the upcoming movie “fantastic”. He sings praises about its departure to a more hardcore sci-fi and fantasy, positioning itself as a stark contrast from Man of Steel.

He further supplements his revelations stating that it’s a departure from Snyder’s DCEU. The heroes in Gunn’s Verse (this might shed light on the Josh Brolin rumors) have been around for quite some time, he says. “Gunn’s world stands in stark contrast from ours and the DCEU. Its heroes have defined its history and shaped the DCU,” adds Daniel RPK.

An MCU or a Star Wars?

Daniel RPK also mentions a divergence from the formula of the ever-popular Marvel cinematic universe. Instead, the project paves a way more akin to Star Wars, with different narratives set during different eras. He explains, “The DCU will spotlight various timelines, rather than sticking strictly to the present day model.”

Despite parting ways with DC, Snyder could make a comeback. He once hinted at possibly working on Frank Miller’s Batman The Dark Knight Returns adaptation. This, however, was extricated from the connected universe -originally intended for his own Superman film. Furthermore, Gunn’s Superman project appears to be piquing Snyder’s interest, with some of his crew reportedly partaking in it. After all, Gunn and Snyder happen to share a friendship. Perhaps this Superman project will fuse the best of both worlds – only time will tell.
