Dark Horse to Publish Mark Millar’s The Magic Order in Two-in-One Library Edition Format

Dark Horse Publishing is set to release writer Mark Millar’s The Magic Order series in a two-in-one library edition format, with the first volume hitting shelves on January 14, 2025. This news comes as part of Dark Horse’s partnership with Millar, who is known for his work on Marvel’s The Ultimates and DC’s the Authority.

The Magic Order follows the story of a family of magicians fighting supernatural evils in a real-world setting, a unique twist on the traditional magic genre. The series was originally published by Image Comics and collected into five volumes before Dark Horse took over as the publisher.

Millar’s collaboration with Dark Horse will not only include new editions of his previous work but also new titles in the Millarworld universe. The Magic Order library edition will bring together volumes one and two in a hardcover format, showcasing the incredible talent of the artists involved in the series.

In an email interview with Publishers Weekly, Millar shared his excitement for the new releases and his plans for the future of his work with Dark Horse. He discussed his approach to releasing his work in a more concentrated manner, preferring to have “occasional hurricanes” of new titles rather than a steady stream of monthly publications.

Millar also delved into the inspiration behind The Magic Order, explaining his desire to create a magical story with a gritty, real-world feel. By blending elements of crime dramas with high fantasy, Millar aimed to appeal to a broader audience and provide a fresh take on the genre.

When asked about the balance between his characters’ magical powers and their limitations, Millar emphasized the importance of human drama in driving the story forward. By focusing on the family dynamics within the secret society of magicians, he created a relatable foundation for the fantastical elements of the series.

As for the choice to have different artists for each volume of The Magic Order, Millar cited expediency as a key factor. Working with multiple artists simultaneously allowed him to maintain a consistent release schedule without sacrificing quality or resorting to fill-in artists.

While there are no plans for more Magic Order stories beyond the five-volume series, Millar hinted at possible spin-offs if the Netflix series adaptation proves successful. He expressed his pride in the series and its conclusion, reaffirming his dedication to creating compelling and unique storytelling experiences for his audience.

Overall, the collaboration between Mark Millar and Dark Horse promises to deliver exciting new editions of fan-favorite titles and introduce readers to fresh, original stories from the Millarworld universe. With The Magic Order library edition leading the charge, fans can look forward to a diverse and captivating lineup of comics in the coming years.
