La Oficina: The Next Global Take on "The Office" Lands in Mexico
Everyone’s favorite workplace comedy is getting a fresh twist with a Mexican flair. Prime Video is partnering with Amazon MGM Studios and Gaz Alazraki’s Máquina Vega to bring a Spanish-language remake of "The Office." This new series, cleverly titled "La Oficina," promises to deliver laughter across Latin America.
Setting the Stage in Aguascalientes
Set in the picturesque setting of Aguascalientes, this adaptation follows Jerónimo Ponce III. As the regional manager at Olimpo Soaps, Ponce navigates the quirks and chaos of a traditional office environment. Workers at Jabones Olimpo face daily escapades with a leader that redefines conventional.
Alonso Aguilar, the head of Mexico Originals at Amazon Studios, expressed his excitement. "It’s thrilling to create our version of such a monumental comedy. The Mexican office worker subculture is both rich and surreal," he noted. With industry giants like Marcos Bucay and Gaz Alazraki steering the ship, Aguilar promises something unique. This shows potential beyond expectations and promises to captivate fans of the originals.
In the Hands of Proven Creative Minds
Gaz Alazraki is no stranger to successful projects. He penned and directed "Nosotros los Nobles," the second-highest-grossing Mexican film in history. Additionally, he co-created and directed "Club de Cuervos," Netflix’s first Spanish-language original series. Now, with an exclusive deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Alazraki embarks on the next journey. He will write, produce, and direct series, with "La Oficina" leading the charge.
"La Oficina" is set to stream exclusively on Prime Video. This availability spans Latin America, Brazil, and Spain. The beloved series "The Office" has already been adapted in countries like India, Poland, Finland, and recently Australia. Prime Video itself launched the Australian version earlier this month.
An Eager Endeavor in Comedy
For Alazraki, this adaptation is a dream come true. "I’ve wanted to adapt ‘The Office’ since watching Ricky Gervais DVDs in 2003," he confessed. The humor and format captivated him as the boldest comedy he’s encountered. Grateful for the trust from Gervais and Merchant, Alazraki is eager to make Mexico laugh.
Details remain scarce on the casting and launch of the Mexican "The Office." The production is keeping its cards close as development continues. Meanwhile, fans can also anticipate a spinoff of the American version titled "The Paper," set for release on Peacock. Until then, anticipation builds for a hilarious take on corporate culture straight from Mexico.
